Reprise: Valentine One vs. Bel 985 vs. Escort 8500

Pros What everybody else said: sensitivity, arrows/counter, (... read review ...)
Cons Often going off, and maybe the lack of a few things
Recommended it? Yes

(edit, Sept 12 '04 - I feel obligated to add something here. A few months ago, I sold the Valentine and went with the Escort's brother, the 8500x50. I really have to say that I'm more comfortable with the x50 than I was with the Valentine; despite the lack of a rear radar antenna, I personally like... Read full review »

The best 400 dollars you will ever spend.

Pros Directional arrows, sensitivity
Cons price
Recommended it? Yes

Let me start by saying this thing has paid for itself many times over. I am by no means that guy you see blowing past at ridiculous speeds, but I often find myself doing 10 to 20 miles an hour over the speed limit. I live in Colorado and do a lot of driving up in the mountains, as well as around... Read full review »

Valentine One in Southern California

Pros It Works, Directional Arrow
Cons Price, No Case, Too Sensitive
Recommended it? Yes

Well, it's been a year since I have had my Valentine One. I now have a much better picture of device. First, I'd like to say that I am a bit disappointed. The device is too sensitive. Some days it seems that the laser warning never goes off. Whether morning, noon, or night... it never fails to go... Read full review »

Latest software is a step backward

byfivefalls Mar 15, 2003

Pros Arrows pointing to radar source. Excellent peripheral vision.
Cons Latest software is not selective enough to other nearby detectors.
Recommended it? Yes

I have had my detector for several years and with one previous software update. I also gave my son an early version. In 2002 I decided to update to the smaller version of the V1. I went from what was very close to an ideal detector, to a detector that falses more often than my earlier unit and with... Read full review »

Valentine One: If God Had A Radar Detector, It'd Be The V1!

bysoupcraze Feb 1, 2003

Pros Very Sensitive Detector, Rear Protection, Shows Were Cops Are, Price
Cons NOT HAVING ONE!
Recommended it? Yes

The Valentine One is unlike any radar detector that I've ever seen. I love my Valentine One, I love it like I love my family, like I love my car, and like I love my life. Where would I ever be without a Valentine One? If I were God, the radar detector that I'd be using would be a Valentine One, not... Read full review »

Tried the rest then bought the best!

Pros Great sensitivity, simple to operate, and you gotta love those arrows!
Cons Too prone to falsing. No storage case. Hard to see the band indicators.
Recommended it? Yes

Hi, my name is Clark and I'm a speedaholic. I drive fast. Really fast. Probably too fast. I justify this by the fact that I drive 180 miles round trip to work and if I drove the speed limit I'd be wasting too much time. The truth of the matter is that I've always driven fast and probably always... Read full review »

V1 --the way to go

Pros Great detection;easy mounting/dismounting
Cons pricey
Recommended it? Yes

I've had a V1 for about 4 years now...and I dont leave home without it. Long range detection is tops. I love the bogey counter and directionals, it has save me a few times! Some small towns in my area use multiple radar traps in the same general area..they catch the ones without the bogey counter... Read full review »

Still the Benchmark Maker...

Pros Best Sensitivity Around; Arrows
Cons Auto Dim; No text

The Valentine One was first brought out in early 90s. The unit featured X, K and Wideband Ka. For its time and still, it was King of X and K band pickup. Ka Wideband, thought featured, was in middle of the pack of detectors.

Now this Valentine was a almost splitting image of the Escort... Read full review »

#1 By a Long Shot

Pros Arrows, Sensitivity, Built like a tank (no cheap plastic).
Cons Hard to read band IDs at night.
Recommended it? Yes

Let me start my review by saying I have used nearly every detector ever made, being a radar detector fanatic.

The only real competition comes from the Bel 980 (now 985) and the Passport 8500.

The Bel 980 is a fair detector, IMHO the #3 detector. The windshield mount is horrible,... Read full review »

The best radar detector. Period.

bydilbertinnh Jun 12, 2002
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? 10 Comments
Pros Great sensitivity, can track multiple radars.
Cons Need to place unit in a good spot on the windshield for best performance.
Recommended it? Yes

People can complain about the high price of this unit, and to shell out over $400 is a lot. But my V1 has paid for itself numerous times already. It is not fancy, doesn't give you many options, but then again, it doesn't need to. The Valentine One is so easy to use and understand that at the end of... Read full review »
