Waiting for Godot in the deep south
It seems unlikely that Erskine Caldwell had Samuel Beckett's _Waiting For Godot_ in mind when he wrote _Tobacco Road_, but the similarities are worth noting. Twisted Family Road
_Tobacco Road_ is an unusual novel as it still bears shock value today. The folks in 1932 must have been absolutely blown away. Caldwell takes the Lester family and shows the devolution of the human. These characters go to any lengths to survive using animalistic qualities and instinct.
