I purchased a Food Saver Vac 550 (model compact II) at a garage sale with no instruction book. These are a few things I have eventually learned while using this product. Of course if you have... Read full review »

Pros When it worked, it was fine
Cons They do not last long and cannot be repaired.

This is the second Foodsaver I bought. The first one was the mini foodsaver. Neither lasted more than two years. In both cases, the sealing strip burned out. The manufacturer said that neither could be fixed. For the premium cost for this manufacturer, I expected more.

I will not be burned... Read full review »

I have had the food saver for a few years now.  I don't use it often because it is extremely frustrating.  If there is the slightest smidgen of food close to the sealer, it will never seal.  On several occasions I have fought with it over and over and finally gave up.  This is another example of... This review and rating is for FOODSAVER.COM not the actual product.

Pros Preserves food in handy sizes and in a way that doesn't damage the food
Cons Breaks down too often
Recommended it? Yes

I like very much what you get from the Foodsaver - WHEN it works. I am on my fourth unit over the last 2 years. I paid more to replace the first one "under warranty" than I could have bought a new one for at Costco. That replacement stopped working after 6 months and they sent me another - for free... Pros Great seal (when working) and food stays fresh.
Cons Seal gets loose after a couple of years, no parts or service from Tilia.
Recommended it? No

I worked great in the beginning. I would buy large quanities of meat or other items from the local Sam's club. Then seal up and freeze/store the remaining purchased amounts. Great for camping. It has been two years and now I discovered the top seal came loose. I easily superglued it in place... Read full review »

Good idea that sometimes doesn't work very well

byshamanross Feb 18, 2006
3 Helpfuls 4 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good concept
Cons products need to be designed better
Recommended it? No

It's a good concept that the company needs to work on. The bags are expensive and sometimes (about a third of the time) don't seal well, so they must be redone. That's inconvenient and takes a lot of extra time. The bags also do not reseal well so you don't get the re-use that the company... Read full review »

Excellent money saver, Excellent food saver. I use it for everything that air spoils, including caulking compound tubes and tubes of glue.

However, the "Food Saver bags are good, but too expensive. Black & Decker's bags are a little less expensive, but WORTHLESS in that they do not hold... Read full review »

We decided to try the vacuum saver system because the price of processing wild game has gotten so expensive. For the investment, this is the best food preservation system I've seen. In the 2 years we've had ours, we've processed more than 1000 lbs. of deer and elk, more than 200lbs of fish and a... Read full review »

Fish, fish and more fish! We are a family of fish eaters and are lucky enough to live in the West Coast where we can eat all the fresh salmon, trout, cod, bottom fish and stealhead we want. I used it regularly until the tape strip that covers the heating element became damaged. I called Tilia and was told they do not supply that part. I knew my unit was out of the one year warranty, so they couldn't replace the unit. They did offer me 20% off of a new unit. I told them that was silly,... Read full review »

Based on these reviews I purchased two Tilia FoodSaver 550's (one as a gift). My problem is not with the reviews, but the fact that I received model 500's in 550 packaging with a sheet enclosed saying they functioned identically, which is not strictly true. The 500 has a two-hand operation while... Read full review »

January 2006 update.

The 550 is still going strong. I have only sucked juice into the catch channel once so that may be the reason it still works perfectly. Mason jar sealing is still the primary use, but I have sealed holiday decorations in bags, such as vegetable-based Fall decorations... Read full review »

I saw the Tilia Food Saver Vac 550 Food Vacuum Sealer Kit
