My son has been a big fan of Thomas The Tank Engine and all the engines on the island of Sodor since he was a little over a year old. Now at almost 4 years old, he continues to enjoy anything Thomas The Tank Engine and has many different Thomas toys and videos. When he received the Spills and Chills video, it came with a die cast Percy, and my son wanted to watch it immediately. During his first viewing of this video, he watched the entire thing, from beginning to end with a look of fascination on his face. Many times throughout the video, he would play with his wooden Thomas trains and re-enact scenes that he had just watched from the video. After repeated viewings of Spills and Chills, my son decided that a few places on the video were scary for him, and he has me fast forward over these spots. All in all though, he enjoys this video and chooses to watch it often.
The stories contained on this video are:
Toby?s Discovery?Sir Topham Hatt and his grandchildren take a ride in Henrietta and Toby to an unexplored part of the island. There they find the castle that they were searching for and a mine. Toby is worried that the place may be haunted. Thomas tells him the story about the old warrior ghost, who it later turns out to really be the engine Bertram. Toby and Bertram become friends and they take turns bringing visitors to the castle and mine.
Rusty and The Boulder? There is a mysterious boulder that Rusty feels is watching him. When a thumper collects some rocks under the boulder, the workers forget to check how this will effect the boulder, and soon rocks began to fall, but Rusty manages to escape. The next day, as the thumper is again working, Rusty notices that the boulder is moving. Then the boulder begins moving down the track, "chasing" several engines. After the boulder smashes into a building, Sir Topham Hatt decides to close the mines and leave that part of the island alone.
Duncan Gets Spooked?Rusty helped Peter Sam go to the water tower. The freight cars decide to runaway, and end up falling off the viaduct. Rusty decides to tell the engines a ghost story about an engine that lost control and plunged over the side and fell in a swamp. Duncan is spooked by the story, and on his next ride his driver plays a trick on him, telling him that the flickering lights ahead are that of a ghost engine, and then the driver secretly throws a rock in the ravine. Duncan thinks a ghost is after him and rushes goes back to his shed.
Stepney Gets Lost?Stepney is sent to help Toby and Mavis in the quarry. He is given strict instructions to be back before dark because it is easy to get lost. But he forgets the warning, and while Stepney is pulling a night train, the fog comes down and he can?t see that the points are set in the wrong direction, sending them into unknown territory. Stepney?s driver decides to rest where they are, and when the fog lifts, Stepney finds that he is in the scrap yard. Two diesels push Stepney to the grabber where he will be turned into scrap. Just as the grabber is about to get him, Sir Topham Hatt appears and saves Stepney. This is a very scary scene, and one that we always fast forward through.
Haunted Henry?Henry is to take a goods train by the lake. Before he leaves, Edward tells him that legend says that when an owl hoots the fog/mist will roll in and a ghost will come out. On his route, Henry comes across an amber lamp which means to precede with caution. Then he sees a sign that says, "Beware of the viaduct." Next he encounters a fog man?s coat, and finally a light moving in the distance. Henry thinks this is a ghost, and they decide to go back. The next day they find out that the viaduct was unsafe, and it was a good thing they had turned around. That night, the viaduct is fixed and Henry is to go on the same route again. In the distance, Henry hears an owl hooting, and then he sees an amber light. Unbeknown to them, there is a landslide, and when Henry finally figures this out, he brakes hard, but some of the freight cars hit the rubble and plunge into the ravine. When they see a figure approaching them, Henry is sure it is a ghost, but it really is Bailey, a fogman, who had tried to warn them about the rubble.
Sir Topham Hatt?s Holiday?Thomas was to take Sir Topham Hatt and his family on a holiday, but Lady Hatt refused to ride in Annie and Clarabel, Thomas? coaches, because she says they are old and uncomfortable, so Percy brings the family to the airfield to ride in Harold instead. While the family is boarding Harold, Tiger Moon, an airplane, buzzes by them, knocking Sir Topham Hatt to the ground. A few days later, Tiger Moon is missing and Sir Topham Hatt and Harold search for him, and find him crashed. Sir Topham Hatt grounds him, and then has Harold fly him back to rejoin his family on vacation. The family decides to take a boat ride, but do not pay attention to where they are going and get stuck in a mud bank. Percy comes to their rescue using the brake down train, and Lady Hatt decides that engines can be useful after all.
Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining?a music video that shows video clips of various spills and chills from this video and other Thomas videos. Unlike some of the other Thomas music videos, this one does not have words on the bottom of the screen.
Personally, I like the Spills and Chills video. It is exciting, and entertaining to watch even for adults. It is different from the other Thomas videos, with a lot more action, and different plots to the stories. Although some scenes may be scary for younger viewers, if your child is a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, like my son is, this video will become a favorite.
