You should watch it!!
This movie was very interesting movie. It showed many Japanese cultures too, which I even didn't know. I usually don't see the movie about old Japan, but it was really good for me to learn much more about it.
The movie was filmed as taking place more than 100 years ago, and there was...

good movie
This movie was too long (I had to pee) and very predictable in parts (I rolled my eyes). In addition, for a movie that didn't have enough emotional bonding, it relied a lot on melodrama to manipulate the audience. See important death scenes for more details. The editing together of the scenes was... Read full review »
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Nathan Algren is a broken man. Tom Cruise portrays this ex army captain who has been reduced to promoting the latest models from Winchester rifles in a carnival side show, whilst wallowing in drunken depression, as a result of his part in the Battle of Little Big Horn. After being sacked from this... Read full review »
Above all Comes Honor - Duty & Loyalty {\|\|\|[|========>>>>
Simon Graham: They say Japan was made by a sword. They say the old gods dipped a coral blade into the ocean, and when they pulled it out four perfect drops fell back into the sea, and those drops became the islands of Japan. I say, Japan was made by a handful of brave men. Warriors, willing to... Read full review »
White guy learning the ways of the samurai?
Last Samurai, is an awesome movie. It has a great story to it. It shows a lot of Japan's beauty from the scenery and culture of Japanese people and the ways of the samurai. The action is pretty great. It is really powerful to see the pride that the samurai had that they would stand up against a... Read full review »
Tom Cruise with a dash of Gladiator, Dances with Wolves and Shogun
In a bid to get a "Best Oscar for Acting", Tom Cruise stars as Captain Nathan Algren in The Last Samurai. Algren is a Civil War veteran who has nothing to live for, but carves out a living by displaying the might of Winchester rifles to the ignorant and easily fooled public.
Yet, when the...

Dances with Lotus Petals
There's this human thing I hate called empathy. Someone dies onscreen, someone cries, someone compares the melancholy of life to lotus blossoms, and I can't help but feel sad, as little as I actually feel for the characters. Watching The Last Samurai, I was never empathetic towards the plight of... Read full review »
The Last Samurai....Lean & Mean III W/O
I don't know about you, but I've always found it a pleasure when after watching a film you weren't very interested in, you sit back and realize that it was a great movie. Such is the case with 2003's The Last Samurai. This picture really caught me off guard. Combining action, depth, wonderful... Read full review »
The Last Samurai... You should see it!
I hate writing reviews after I haven't written one for a good six days. It's actually kinda painful. It's as if I'm out of shape or something. It's like running. Getting out there and running when you haven't done it for a few days can feel very bad. You feel as if you're... empty or something... Read full review »
WHY is he the last samurai again?
This was a good action movie with a lot of heart. The plot revolves around Tom Cruise's character, Cruise is a war hero and is hired by the Japanese emporer to train the Japanese army. Threw some odd circumstances Cruise ends up living with the enemy (the samurai) after he's hurt in battle. Cruise... Read full review »
Top Shogun, Daimyo of Thunder
Forget the overblown bluster of Master and Commander or the two-years-too-late pity party for Return of the King - the real winner for last year's Best Picture should have been Tom Cruise's historical epic, The Last Samurai.
Captain Nathan Algren, a veteran of the Civil War, has seen far...

The Last Samurai: yeah, there's comparisons, but it's still a good movie
I've always been interested in Japanese culture, ever since a train trip in my teens, and the only thing I had to read was a copy of Shogun, by James Clavell. The more I studied the intricaties of it, the more interested I became. True, most of my study lay in the direction of the Heian court... Read full review »
The Last Samurai: Gooshy Sushi
"The Last Samurai" tries to incorporate elements of the work of Akira Kurosawa and the Oscar-winning "Dances With Wolves", but ends up, essentially, with an entertaining but wrongheaded Tom Cruise vehicle. It drives to imitate a theme Kurosawa invented and perfected - the eastern western. In the... Read full review »
A go-see movie
I have to admit, even though I prefer to stay away from Tom Cruise, this is so-far THE best movie i have seen this year. Great acting, and great effects. Its one of those movies that you come away from feeling good. The movie is about a former US Army Civil War hero. He is asked to travel to Japan... Read full review »
Samurai Smackdown!
The Last Samurai is easily one of my favorite new films, gorgeously shot and brilliantly acted. Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe are outstanding in their roles as enemies who become allies after each reaches a new level of understanding of the other's culture. Watanabe, especially, is wonderful as the... Read full review »
The Best Tom Cruise Movie....Ever.
First off I would like to say that I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise, mainly by the fact that all he is in is movies that I think are never worth seeing. Well anyways, the movie begins with the Civil War hero Capt. Nathan Algren he is very honorable in the beginning...not! Capt. Nathan is a man lost... Read full review »
More Samurai Papers
I love Samurai. I am deeply fascinated by this ancient and beautiful system, and could watch samurai movies everyday. My friends find this odd. See, I am a pacifist, so it seems very strange that I should have such a fascination with a martial culture. Yet I do. What I try to explain to people is:... Read full review »

LAST SAMURAI
Edward Zwick directs this sumptuously designed, action-packed period epic that stars Tom Cruise as Captain Nathan Algren. Algren, a former Civil War hero, is adrift in 1870s San Francisco after the war, a lost soul struggling to stay afloat in a booze-soaked stupor. When he is recruited by the Japanese government to train the Emperor's army, he departs for the unknown shores of Japan and begins training the soldiers in American military tactics. But these skills are useless against a band of samurai rebels led by the proud warrior Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe), and Algren is easily defeated. He is taken to a remote samurai village where he learns samurai warrior codes and ways of life, developing a deep bond with Katsumoto and sharing philosophical conversations with him. Caught between the feudal culture of the ancient samurai warriors and the encroachment of modern society, Algren is forced to choose between his own culture or Katsumoto's. THE LAST SAMURAI is lavish in its dramatic period costumes and intense performances, and will thrill fans of both historical drama and action films. Ed
