Pros Historically pretty accurate; Billy Bob Thornton's portrayal of Davy Crockett
Cons Some parts move slowly; Some situations are not explained.
Recommended it? Yes

Everyone who has taken an American history class has heard about the Texas war for independence and the battles that took place between Sam Houston, Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana, and other military leaders. And as most students recall, the siege that led to the fight for independence... Read full review »

Pros Billy Bob Thornton is King once again. Historically accurate.
Cons Goes on for a little long, first half hour is really slow.
Recommended it? Yes

I'm not much of a big fan of historical films, but The Alamo holds some meaning for me. As a child, one of my 4th grade projects was to build a small "model" of the Alamo. To this day, I still remember almost everything about how it looked, the history surrounding it, and the fact that after we... Read full review »

"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." From "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

I had high hopes for the 2004 version of The Alamo, hoping against hope that it would tell the true story and yet be cinematic and dynamic. While the film undoubtedly did its best to paint the... Read full review »

Pros historical accuracy, cinematography, DVD bonus features, Thornton, Mollà
Cons some klunky dialogue, confusing first half hour

Since seeing for myself the the ruins of the never-finished Mission San Antonio de Valero, generally known as "the Alamo," are the least impressive of the four of the Spanish-built mission complexes around San Antonio, Texas that I saw (I missed seeing one) and hearing history of the 1836 siege, I... Pros Billy Bob did a GREAT job; other actors, too. Good story, historically accurate.
Cons Some minor confusing parts. Conflict between Bowie and Travis tedious.

I never pay much attention to what the Official Critics say and this movie is a good example of why. I'm not sure what exactly "they" hate about it so much, but I found it to be a fine movie and I'm glad I went!

This review reveals some plot details about The Alamo, but you probably... Read full review »

Cons Wholesome entertainment for the family...

Sam Houston and the boys must be rolling over in their graves. They'd never believe that it's gone full cycle just a little over a century and a half later. Then again, it depends on who you're listening to. If you believe the hype from the Minutemen propaganda machine and the Aztlan websites, then... Read full review »

Pros most everything, Billy Bob Thornton in particular
Cons duration, cheesy lines, and an over-powering score

"The Alamo" has totally taken me by surprise. After being delayed for four months and the subject of negative buzz, the film has opened in the dismal month of April and is spectacular. What had been the problem with it? The film has depicted the lives of real men amidst one of the most meaningful... Read full review »

Pros Billy Bob Thornton, The Alamo battle.
Cons If my wife thinks a movie is slow it is really darn slow!
Recommended it? No

Disney had a good reason to shelve this movie back in 2003. They had an even worse reason to release it now in 2004.

For now, the Rod Howard drop out/Russell Crowe drop out/Ethan Hawke drop out film where 100 mil was spent has grossed a mere 9 mil to tie with Cedric the Entertainer on... Read full review »

Alamo DVD

An epic that evokes films such as HOW THE WEST WAS WON and DANCES WITH WOLVES THE ALAMO details the key 1863 battle fought to win Texas from the Mexican government. Originally constructed as a Spanish mission the Alamo provided a secure post between Texas settlements and the troops of General Santa Anna Emilio Echevarria protecting the scores of people working to develop the budding territory including Davy Crockett Billy Bob Thornton James Bowie Jason Patric and Sam Houston Dennis Quaid. But when it was left in the care of an inexperienced leader the men stationed at the Alamo found themselves in a deadly ambush by Santa Anna. With an insurmountable advantage in strategy and sheer numbers Santa Anna led the complete slaughter of Alamo forces an act that incited the ire of Houston who initiated the turnaround that brought Santa Anna's quick defeat. Thornton provides a standout performance as Davy Crockett who had gained notoriety as an adventurer rumored to have jumped the Mississippi River. As the Alamo troops prepare to fight Thornton's nuanced Crockett tempers their adrenalin with horrific battle tales and helps them come to terms with their impending mortality. While graphically reminding viewers of the horrors of war the film also pays homage to the bravery and patriotism of the men who fought to liberate Texas live in a free democratic society and build better lives.
