Evil ded seyz: 'Farewell to arms!'

byskyth May 10, 2000

Pros graphics, good engine, story line, everything
Cons ai not so impressive
Recommended it? Yes

Space combat genre has been a dying breed until recently. Privateer made it seem like it was at its apex, and that it would not get any better. Privateer II sort of proved that point, but than we were served with a superior title such as Freespace 2. Things have been slow moving lately, but... Read full review »

Tachyon Misses the Fringe, but still flies true

Pros Great voice work and a top notch flight model
Cons average graphics, Banzi AI, confusing keyboard setup
Recommended it? Yes

Tachyon The Fringe is the latest space combat sim from Novalogic(Delta Force, F22 Lightning). While not the most advanced game in the world, Tachyon is a competent addition to the genre that sprouted Wing Commander and Freespace.

You start the game as Jake Logan (voiced by cult film... Read full review »

Novalogic's space sim ain't dim

bydaedric Oct 30, 2000
19 Helpfuls 20 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Immersive plot; lovely graphics; some excellent mission variety
Cons Too structured; limited trading an exploring; dubious 'artificial intelligence'
Recommended it? Yes

Novalogic has produced a tightly scripted game where the evolving narrative takes precedence over open-ended, free shooting and trading gameplay. It is a remarkably playable and enjoyable space sim that compares well with contemporaries such as FreeSpace and StarLancer. Just don't expect to be... Read full review »

What a mistake

bylordchocice Jun 13, 2001
12 Helpfuls 13 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Unique characteristics of main character, graphics are nice
Cons Gameplay, fights, limited scope of game, no great upgrades
Recommended it? No

This game looked great off the shelf. From the box cover and write-up, it seemed a lot like "Escape Velocity" for the mac, but in a 3d interface. So, I went ahead and bought it.

My first impressions were great- for about 25 seconds. I liked the main character and his voiceovers, as some... Read full review »

Just another day in the fringe

Pros Good graphics and voice acting
Cons Too restrictive

It's the future and you are mercenary pilot Jake Logan, doing odd jobs for the mega-corporations. Does the theme sound familiar. Well, there are no surprises here. Naturally, in the future the mega-corporations rule space with an iron fist. They have enough money to keep the government in line, and... Read full review »

Not quite Freespace 2, but Better Than Privateer 2.

byAlkaiser May 9, 2000
10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Bruce Campbell, Graphics, Gameplay
Cons Horrid Win2K support causes a myriad of problems.
Recommended it? Yes

Tachyon: The Fringe is a space flight shooter (it'd be wrong to call it a sim, seeing as how we actually really have NO idea how all this stuff would perfom in space.) that borrows heavily from the Privateer games. You've got a fighter, and you can soup it up with various gadgets and gizmos. You... Read full review »

Bring on the multiplay!

byNewskier Jun 20, 2000
8 Helpfuls 9 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Graphics, sound, engaging storyline, addictive multiplay
Cons poor documentation
Recommended it? Yes

This game offers a lot of great features, although some aren't really implemented correctly.

First off, the solo game has an engaging storyline and offers a number of paths for you to choose with varied missions that you can accept. The option to purchase ships and outfit them as you'd... Read full review »

Tachyon: Faster than light or a setback?

byFirestorm66 Aug 30, 2000
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? 1 Comment
Pros excellent presentation and gameplay, multiplayer, storyline
Cons somewhat odd graphics very close up, multiplayer tends to lag up on slow modems

I seem to be writing reviews on games a lot nowadays, and one of them happens to be Tachyon: the Fringe. The creators of Delta Force who revolutionized on-line gameplay in FPS games bring to us the universe hundreds of years in the future. You star as a star pilot known as Logan, and in solo mode... Pros Bruce Campbell's voiceovers for the main character, sound effects and visuals
Cons Gameplay, story, funfactor.

Sometimes a game company puts together a real prize. Sometimes a game company puts out a pre-beta of a real prize. You can probably guess that Tachyon: The Fringe falls in the latter category.
You play Jake Logan, an independent pilot (Read: Mercenary) who does odd jobs for different... Read full review »

The Control Setup is Horrible

bydnyberg May 5, 2000
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? 2 Comments
Pros The game's pretty, and Bruce Campbells voice samples are a very nice touch.
Cons The control configuration options options are bad, bad, bad
Recommended it? No

I've tried the demo, as well as borrowed a copy of the full game, and guess what? The controls configs absolutely reek, while absolutely no online review I've seen bothers to mention that.

Tachyon allows joystick, mouse and keyboard, and from the setup screen you'd think you could have any... Read full review »
