Syriana: no heroes, all losers, deeply cynical -- quick, pass me my antidepressants
After hearing a lot about how the critics raved about this film, and having it leer at me from my Netflix queue, it was finally time to watch it. And now, that I've sat through this deeply disturbing film, I wish that I hadn't.
Syriana, adapted from the book See No Evil by Robert Baer,...

Oil and Big Business Leads to Shady Deals
The oil market has been something that many have speculated about for several decades. Does our nation really need this resource badly enough to go to war over it? Is it cost effective to send our men and women into hostile lands to fight for this or that leader only to end up giving the hard won... Read full review »
Syriana is horrible!
I am sorry, I think this is one of George Clooney's worst film choices!! I think he is a great actor, but this movie was horrible. It was very hard to follow, and too much going on at once. This movie did not keep my interest at all due to the fact I had a hard time following the story line. I... Read full review »
Oil Can Get Your Hands Dirty: Syriana
Syriana (2005)
"Dig six feet, find three bodies - but dig twelve feet and you may find forty."
Real life is messy. Most of us would agree that things just don't always work out the way we plan and Syriana tries to show the relationships and repercussions of many seemingly random...

Oil's Well That Ends Well
Finally a great movie. I truly loved this work of art, a fictional story set in a very real world depicting exactly the various overlapping and complex forces that make up the global predicament in regards to war, peace and energy production, theological conflict, political structure and reform,... YUCK! I hated this movie
It was boring and stupid. Only reason I watched it was because my hubby wanted to see it, so we rented it. I thought since it was nominated, it would be good. HA! No way! (my hubby loved it though) Must be the true definition of a "guy flick" Read full review »
A brilliant film, one of 2005's finest.
Syriana is a brilliant political thriller and in my opinion, the second best film of the great year for cinema that was 2005.
Syriana's script, which I've read twice and can be accessed right off the film's website, is absolutely terrific. Gaghan lives up to and surpasses the promise he...

The Legal Cartels
In Stephen Gaghan's unflinching analysis of the oil industry, the essential cultural divide is explained simply when financial analyst Bryan Woodman (Matt Damon) calls from his first trip to the Middle East to report that the temperature is, no hyperbole, "125 degrees". It seems so simple, but I... Read full review »
Syriana - An undeniably powerful but puzzling liberal lecture
The writer of Traffic, Stephen Gaghan, digs even deeper into corruption with this much ballyhooed political thriller.
Like Traffic, there are several plot threads that all eventually weave together into a whole. Whereas Traffic's central theme was the corruption that resulted from drug...

Couldn't wait till it was over
This was one of the worse movies I have ever seen. The acting was Ok but the plot was hard to follow, tried to make a political statement but failed. If it was free it would be a waste of time. Read full review »
SYRIANA--YOU COULD HAVE IT SO MUCH BETTER
Bob Barnes (George Clooney) is a career CIA operative whose main charge over the past few decades has been to carry out covert assassinations in the Middle East. When a new assignment--an ordered hit on Prince Nasir (Alexander Siddig), the idealistic but problematic heir to an Arab nation and US... Read full review »
Syriana: Where intelligence and entertainment diverge.
From Stephen Gaghan, the Oscar-winning writer of 2000's Traffic, comes Syriana, an ambitious film that shrugs off standard categorization. It's a political thriller that unusually emphasizes the politics over the thrills, with a dense plot that requires an almost exhaustive amount of attention, not... Read full review »
Syriana --- Starring George Clooney and Matt Damon in possible Oscar Winning Roles
Syriana is a film based on a book written by Robert Baer. That book was called "See No Evil", and must have been a pretty good one because of all of the characters within the story. The screenplay was adapted with the help of Stephen Gaghan, who also ended up being the Director of the film. Prior... Read full review »
I'll See You in Syriana, Mahn
Syriana is essentially the B-side to Traffic. The direction and script is virtually identical; conversations are captured from a spectator's perspective; the cinematography is variant, at times luscious and surreal, others clear and refined. We're clueless to the plot from the start; every scene... Read full review »
why all the criticism?
i still don't understand why this movie would be criticized so much by people saying they simply don't understand it? thats the whole point of the movie. there is so much going on as far as corruption and politics in the oil world that it is not meant to be understood. what you see is what you get... confusing
Syriana certainly touches on an important matter, but because of its importance, the various facts that alternate in the plot and are supposedly connected should be easier to follow. Instead, it is very easy to get lost, and, as a result, the message of the movie struggles to remain effective. Read full review »
Ambitious, but it doesn't deliver everything it wants to.....
Forget about politics and the convoluted relationships between our executive branch, the State Dept., and our intelligence staff, and just go to see "Syriana" if you are interested in serious filmmaking. Gaghan, a screenwriter from the movie "Traffic", gives us more of the same, set in the Middle... Read full review »
I'm still confused.
Ok, let me start off by saying I think of myself as someone who has above average intelligence. I typically follow things pretty well.
I don't know what it is about this movie...me and my friend just sat through it. What I can tell you is that there are about five different plots or story...

...so these three guys walk into a bar....
Wait a minute. What happened in this movie? If a person has no idea about how the big oil game is played, no concept of how the CIA insiders take care of their uncomfortable field personnel, and no idea of what it takes to turn a trusting believer into an Islamic terrorist, this film will leave you... Syriana (2005)
The average American probably knows precious little about the various intricacies of the oil business. Beyond knowing that a lot of it comes from the Middle East and noticing that it keeps getting more expensive to fill up at the local station these days, Average Joe is most likely blissfully naive...
