Witherspoon is Melanie Carmichael, a Southern girl who leaves her past behind in order to find success as a fashion designer in New York City. On the night of a hugely important show, her charming and romantic boyfriend, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), proposes to her. It is at that point that Melanie flees for Alabama, hoping to take care of some unfinished business before Andrew and his mother, New York mayor Kate Hennings (Candice Bergan), discover the truth about her. The truth is that Melanie, whose real last name is Smooter, is still married to her childhood sweetheart, Jake (Josh Lucas), who refuses to grant her a divorce. Girls, I heartily apologize. I meant to post this Friday evening after viewing the movie but I was just too tired.

Pros It doesn't try to deceive you about how stupid it is.
Cons It is as stupid as it is.

After inching his way up from a dreadful career to the somewhat evocative 'Ever After', Andy Tennant should have left well enough alone. Bringing us such fine directing efforts as 'Ferris Bueller' (that's the television show, not the movie), 'The Amy Fisher Story', 'Sliders', and the... Read full review »

Pros Likable performers

Cute movies usually aren't my cup of tea. There are the occasional "chick" flicks that I enjoy. Say Anything is a winner and so is Singles. Jerry Maguire is also an entertaining film. I guess looking at those three films, there is one thing that stands out—Cameron Crowe. Unfortunately, Crowe is not... Read full review »

This delightfully entertaining romantic comedy stars Reese Witherspoon (LEGALLY BLONDE) as sophisticated Melanie Carmichael, a rising New York clothing designer who suddenly finds herself engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor. But this is no fairy tale romance for Melanie. She has skeletons in her fashion-filled closet that include Jake -- the backwoods husband she married in high school who refuses to divorce her. Determined to end their marriage and sever all ties with her past once and for all, Melanie returns to Alabama. But home starts to tug at her heartstrings, and what she thought she wanted may not be what she wants at all.
