Don't expect any customer support

Pros Easy to Use
Recommended it? No

Was quite happy with product until it came to a grinding halt one day. I took the unit apart and found a stripped gear. Since I no longer had the paperwork on this model, I phoned customer service for a schematic and parts list only to learn, the company does not authorize them to supply that... Read full review »

Cons Poor quality of materials in shredder casing.  Not suitable for more than 6...

My fiancee and I did our homework before purchasing this model.  Despite the fact that it was a little more costly than other models out there, we decided to spring for the medium-duty model.  It performed wonderfully and handled numerous sheets with ease.  We were always very... Pros Good cutting power, durable, easy to use.
Cons A bit noisy, a little slow.

If you're anything like us, you get a ton of junk mail and a lot of it has personal information that you don't want to make public knowledge. Most people just throw this type of junk mail in the trash, but we don't feel comfortable doing that with the risk of someone going through our trash and... Read full review »

Shred away your fear of identity theft

Pros Handles 8 sheets at once with staples, junk mail, credit cards, doesn't overheat or...
Cons Dusty, messy to empty.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this shredder to replace a very loud obnoxious one that I was sick of. I asked an employee for assistance in choosing one, but when I told him my price range of less than $40, he did all but laugh at me. Had I not been so sick of the old shredder with its loud grinding, I would have left... Read full review »

Pros Works well for a few months
Cons Plastic gear will break - just a matter of time
Recommended it? No

The shredder whines - but doesnt shred. No longer have receipt so no warranty (I presumed). I took the head apart and there it was - a little plastic gear with 1/3 of the teeth worn down. I called Staples product support to inquire about ordering a replacement gear. For liability reasons (huh?)... Read full review »

Pros Affordably priced, cross-cutting, reliable, great for home use, cuts credit cards
Cons Can be hard to clear cutters, tends to overheat quickly, Basket could be larger
Recommended it? Yes

My husband received a Staples SPL-826X Cross-Cut shredder from his staff Christmas 2006. Since his office has a high-volume shredding system, he brought it home. I was particularly excited because I run my own business from home as well as being the household secretary.

Pros Very nice metal cutters
Cons Piece of junk plastic gears

I think the plastic gear that connects with the motor shaft is not a good idea. Lets face it, good construction connected by a weak plastic gear that makes the unit fill up our landfills. Read full review »

Broke the same day I bought it!!

bygeoback Jun 27, 2007
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros seemed like a good buy at the time with the $20 rebate
Cons cheap piece of junk
Recommended it? No

Picked this up at staples because it appeared to be a decent shredder for $50 ($30 after rebate) but found I quickly found out why they're offering a rebate.

It broke after filling the basket half full while shredding a folded up credit card offer about 4 sheets of paper thick.

Shred Paper (but not Staples) with the Staples SPL-826X 8 Sheet Shredder

byquasar Jun 4, 2007
25 Helpfuls 26 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros cross-cut, doesn't wear down, handles variety of paper thicknesses, large capacity...
Cons very heavy lid, thicker paper strains motor, can't handle staples or paperclips
Recommended it? Yes

The Staples SPL-826X 8 Sheet Shredder is a mid-line shredder that cross-cut shreds up to 8 sheets at a time. Selling for around $40, it supposedly handles one credit card (I've not had the chance to try one) but will not take either staples or paper clips.

Roughly the size of a paper... Read full review »

The shredder is dead - good riddance!

bysnats Apr 9, 2007
10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros compact, attractive, inexpensive
Cons noisy, incapable of processing more than a dozen pages at a time
Recommended it? No

I should have done my research in advance, but with a $20 rebate, the deal seemed innocuous enough, at the time. The shredder looked attractive, did not take much space and was capable of shredding up to 8 pages into tiny pieces. However, 2 weeks after the purchase, it started to overheat.

poor design

bythebiblioholic Jan 21, 2007
4 Helpfuls 5 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros attractive look
Cons poor design, destroys liner bags
Recommended it? No

It has two metal tabs inside the mesh basket that the shredder mechanism sits on top of. One of the tabs interlocks with the switch to enable the shredder. These two tabs are sharp pieces of metal. If you put a plastic bag in the basket, it will tear and when you remove the full bag you'll have... Read full review »

Pros None I can't think off.
Cons Unreliable, poor quality, won't last even if you use it as recommended.

Purchased this unit last August. In November the shredders stopped working. Motor spun but the blades would not work the minute you tried to feed it paper. The local Staples Store manager was nice enough to exchange it even though I was suppose to ship it back for repair. New model worked for 8... Read full review »

Pros Shred basket capacity
Cons Overheats, two failed units in 6 months, unreliable.

I've actually gone through two of these in under 6 months. The first unit failed with 2 weeks. The motor stopped working. I brought it back and received a replacement.

Replacement finally broke after almost 6 months of use. I can hear the motor running but the gears stopped moving. Since... Read full review »

Don't waste your money!

Pros Good for light, infrequent use. Affordable.
Cons Plan on it dying much too soon. A jam will be fatal.
Recommended it? No

I bought this shredder and was really pretty careful. I cleared jams by reversing, as directed. I let it cool down. It started to make rattling noises. Per instructions from the tech, I mailed the head to Brooklyn. They said the rattling was caused by broken, stripped pieces and it was my fault and... Read full review »

Broke in almost a month, Staples replaced

5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros The unit works well. 30 day return to store.
Cons The unit stopped working for no reason in about a month.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this product to do shredding of personal papers. The shredder worked great for almost a month, very small pieces. I went to use it one day and the cutters no longer turned, only a whining sound. Upon further inspection, thinking that I would save the $20 just to mail this heavy unit in for... Does not meet advertised capabilities

byalphacentauri Jun 26, 2006
4 Helpfuls 5 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Large open mesh basket to catch shreddings
Cons Not capable of handling "medium duty" requirements.
Recommended it? No

I have had this about 2 months. I chose it because it was advertised as being able to handle "medium duty." It does get medium usage, shredding mail for one person. Although it still functions at this point, I'm not optimistic about its longevity, as no amount of shredder oil will stop that hideous... Read full review »

Cons it will break after a week

I bought this shredder about two weeks ago, and already its gears are stripped.

I've only used it for shredding old papers, and I was very careful to follow all of the recommendations in the manual. But tonight, while shredding junk mail, its gears stripped. Now the motor just spins out... Read full review »

Pros Wide enough for most papers, well-made and easily cleared, safe, low profile
Cons Doesn't shred CDs, sometimes tricky to feed paper in quickly

I had been stockpiling credit card receipts, insurance information, and all sorts of other sensitive paperwork until I bought a decent shredder. I think I've finally found it with this Staples SPL-826X 8 Sheet Medium-Duty Cross-Cut Shredder. This device works great, and has all of the features I... Read full review »

Cons A wider slot would be nice, cannot shred CD's

I work out of my home and I have plenty of sensitive materials from clients and also of my own. I used to either just rip things in half or throw them away when they were no longer needed, or just hold on to stacks of private information of my clients thinking I might need it someday. I was talking to Mom one night not long ago when I learned that my sister's credit card had been stolen and a bunch of merchandise charged on it (and shipped to her house - what's up with that?).
