Average midline headphones

Pros They don't completely suck
Cons Not worth more than 30-40 bucks.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought these thinking they would be a good update to the venerable Sony MDR-V6. Boy was I wrong.

The MDR-V600 are big on bass, too much so for my taste. The bass seems overdone and excessive. The mid levels seem lacking and stifled, feels like I'm listening through a layer of cotton... Read full review »

best value heaphone for multi-purpose use

12 Helpfuls 13 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros excellent value, comfortable, great response and output
Cons earfoam/padding disintigration after regular use
Recommended it? Yes

I have owned several top-rated headphones over my 7 years of DJing and studio work, and can say with certainty that the Sony MDR-V600 heaphones are BY FAR the best value for the money. Their frequency response is excellent, bass is tight and highs are crystal clear. I've never noticed any... Read full review »

The Old Standbys

byfps31520 Nov 7, 2006
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Comfortable; not too much bass; work well with MP3/AAC formats.
Cons Earpads tore apart; headphones no longer fold
Recommended it? Yes

I purchased the Sony MDR-V600s as my first pair of headphones that would cost more than $100. I was now a "beginner audiophile". Throughout 4+ years of my college experience, including 2 different schools and 4 different dorm rooms, the V600s were always there when I needed them. They delivered... Read full review »

I Spent How Much On Headphones?

Pros Foldable, case, comfortable, long cord, and the sound.
Cons Expensive, could feel a bit sturdier, adapter can get lost.
Recommended it? Yes

Alright everyone, here's the story... It was my twentieth birthday (or Christmas, I don't remember) and my mom wanted to get me a present. For the first time in my life she said that we could just go out to the mall and I could pick something I wanted instead of her buying me something random that... Read full review »

Good sound, bad choice of materials

bysatvic Dec 23, 2005

Pros Excellent balanced sound. Foldable. Come with pouch. Stretchable cord. Gold plated jacks
Cons jack adaptor screws in (can't replace if lost). Fabric wears out fast.
Recommended it? No

Had those for about 3 years and very happy with the sound. And it even folds ... kinda :) not really space savers.

Now it's falling apart. The coated fabric covering the cushions in the muffs and the headband is peeling the 'coat' ... wouldn't expect that from Sony only after 2 years... Read full review »

Pros Great sound and very comfortable fit. Fold down nicely.
Cons Some may not like coiled cord. No biggie.
Recommended it? Yes

Truly the BEST phones for around 50-75 bucks. Very comfortable, adjustable fit...helps to get them snugged down to the ears for sonic purposes. Nice compactability...folds down and fits into a very nice storage pouch(included). Very nicely driven by a portable player or home stereo...comes with 1/4"... Read full review »

Pros Fairly durable construction, solid cables and connections, the SONY brand name.
Cons Mediocre sound, earpads decompose in a few years, too expensive for what you get.
Recommended it? No

I've owned a set of MDR-V600 headphones for about 10 years now. When I bought them, I did a lot of research and these were highly regarded.

OK, they're fairly comfortable and they sound - well, they sound mediocre. If you're used to $20 headphones these will sound great to you - but... Read full review »

leather peals off; my speaker broke; cord is not portable

byrehoot Feb 7, 2005
2 Helpfuls 3 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros The frequency response and overall sound is very good, no distortion, they look good
Cons Leather is too thin, the cord is bulky for portable use, speaker broke.
Recommended it? No

I bought a pair and they sounded very good, but the speaker was not attached and it rattled and pressed against my ear, so I returned it. I also noticed that a display pair look terrible since the extremely thin material along the headband had disintegrated. The leather (or whatever the material... Read full review »

Pros Great sound quality, durable.
Cons A little more money than other headphones.
Recommended it? Yes

I do on-air radio and bought these as my first pair of headphones for the biz at $100 back in 94. Would you believe that I JUST replaced these suckers a year ago with the upgrade Sony's?

THEY LAST FOREVER! As far as sound goes, I was really happy with the clearness, so when I went to... Read full review »

Pros Certainly better than that crappy pair of $10 headphones you got with your cd player.
Cons Hot, $$$, those earmuffs will need replacing after a while
Recommended it? Yes

100 bucks? I've had these guys for a week now, and I'm not too impressed. I'm not unhappy, don't get me wrong, but something doesn't seem quite right for 100 dollars.

I bought a pair of MDR-V6 headphones back in the early 90s and was quite happy with them. If I compare the MDR-V600 to the... Read full review »

These Headphone are great in quality and comfort.

When I connected directly to a low power source ie. Sound Card or CD player, they were not good to say the least.

Not wanting to give up, I purchased a Rolls headphone Amp and gave it a try! With a dedicated amp, the sound and... Read full review »

Pros great sound, very comfortable, block ambient noise
Cons a bit pricey
Recommended it? Yes

I ran out to the local Best Buy, because I needed new headphones badly. I had been using the ones Sony provides with it's sport model (which is crap, read my review). Anyway these looked to be pretty good, and a friend of mine said they were sweet, so I thought "why not."

I got them home,... Read full review »

Pros very comfortable, great bass, extending cord, compact
Cons broken, price, cords too long sometimes
Recommended it? Yes

Well.....mine are broken at the moment. This is the second time for me. Although they put out amazing bass at high volumes, the cheap plastic construction doesn't help these headphones. My first little run-in with the repair shop ended with a $75 bill to re-connect a single wire that broke inside... Read full review »

The best headphones for the price

Pros Great sound quality. Blocks out outside noise.
Cons Foam ear pads get sweaty after half hour of use

The Sony MDR-V600 headphones are the best headphones I have ever bought. 3 Helpfuls 4 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Comfortable, Deep Bass, Tank Like Construction
Cons Poor mids and highs, Closed construction causes sweating

These were the first headphones that I purchased on my journey into the audiophile world. My dim salary makes it impossible for me to buy a worth while stereo, so I decided a good pair of headphones would do the trick. Too bad I didn't research my decision.
I walked into Best Buy with little... Read full review »

I can't believe these are replacements for the venerable MDR V6!

bytennis_player Apr 18, 2001
26 Helpfuls 27 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros None, except comfort and blocks out ambient room/environment noise.
Cons Poor sonic performance for the price
Recommended it? No

I've owned a pair of Sony MDR V6's for a long time - possibly 8+ years and have been thoroughly happy with them for the price. They are comfortable, good sonic performance, fold to a fairly compact package and have survived a lot of business travel and the abuse that results from business travel... Read full review »

"THE" headphones to avoid.

bydrewday Feb 21, 2001
4 Helpfuls 5 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Useful as earmuffs?
Cons Inaccurate highs, ringy mids, and pathetic lows.
Recommended it? No

I really try to write positive reviews on whatever I have in my hands, but I can't put myself up to it on this one.

Excessive vibrations in some genres of music sometimes make the headphones highly annoying to listen to. Over the top brightness in taste to sound makes it harsh on the ears... Read full review »

MDR-V6: better suited for DJs

byAgnesVarda Jan 3, 2001
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros well thought-out, functional design
Cons not-so-good sound
Recommended it? Yes

First off let me indicate that this review is actually for the MDR-V6, which was the predecessor to the MDR-V600. But since there's no listing for the V6, I'm sticking it here.

I borrowed these headphones from my brother, who uses them for studio purposes. My own personal headphones are... Read full review »

Pros Great sound
Cons not free.

I tried several other competitive headphones prior to buying the Sony
MDR-V600 model. They were a lot better than the Koss a-130's (a most uncomfortable set-that irritated my ears).
I used the Sony set with the following equipment: A Sony 100w x 5 home entertainment amp., and a Yamaha... Read full review »
