Clear and crisp, but lacking a strong bass.

Pros Excellent sound, beautiful design.
Cons Weak bass, delicate construction.
Recommended it? Yes

If you are looking for a clear, crisp sound, and the ability to hear every instrument in an orchestra without the sound becoming muddy, then these earbuds are worth the price. If you are looking for a set of earbuds with a powerful bass, look elsewhere.

That being said, I found these... Read full review »

Best earbud yet for the money

bystinkwords Apr 7, 2005
2 Helpfuls 3 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Great sound
Cons Same as any earbud - no thumpin' bass
Recommended it? Yes

First off, these are earbuds, so don't expect the kind of bass you'd get from headphones. That said, these are my go-to earphones for portable music listening. They have a great, warm sound, without having to cram them into your ear canal (and you can still hear if you're about to get run over by a... Read full review »

Pros Extremely good sound quality, very comfortable and stylish.
Cons Require at least 2 weeks to break-in. Expensive.
Recommended it? Yes

I was looking for the best earphones to replace the crappy earbuds that came with my MP3 CD player and after hearing so many good reviews about Sony MDR E888, I decided to buy one. I ordered them from the website www.audiocubes.com (a site specializes in high quality audio products from Japan, they... Read full review »

Extremely clear sound for your money.

Pros Wonderful realistic sound, neck chain style cord, beautiful design.
Cons Build quality rather weak, case is more for appearance than performance.
Recommended it? Yes

The Sony MDR-E888 series has been praised by many audiophiles who are on the go. They are famous for their extremely clear sound, provided by a powerful 16mm driver. These earphones return to the audiophile image of Sony. For the last half a decade, Sony tried too hard to appeal to... Read full review »

Sony's nicest earbuds deliver the goods, pretty much

byratnarat Jun 14, 2003
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Great frequency response and bass, clear sound, nifty look and case
Cons Scrawny cord, a bit more soundstage would be nice, picky on low quality mp3
Recommended it? Yes

Sony makes a large line of earbuds known as Fontopia. Supposedly the most elite of the line is the MDR-E888LP, the top model which is rarely found in stores. It can be found for about $50 online.

What to know: The E888LP differentiate themselves from lower models with their 16mm size,... Read full review »

Pros Clear and crisp sound.
Cons Low Impedance (i.e Raspy Bass when loud)
Recommended it? Yes

After using MDR-E827's for at least 5 years, I searched online for hours on which pair of earphones to buy, and when the dual came down to Sony's MDR-EX70 and MDR-E888, sound quality came over style... or did it?

I was disappointed by the very low bass it boasted. Even after the... Read full review »

Definitely the best Ear-Buds under $300

bynrosado Dec 8, 2002
3 Helpfuls 4 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Great sound quality and design. The best sound under $300 (Etymotic).
Cons Requires a two weeks "break in" period to show themselves.
Recommended it? Yes

About 3 or 4 years ago I purchased these top of the line Sony Ear-Buds for $50, to listen to mp3's on the computer. These were the most expensive earphones in the store, so, they should be the better ones.
Listening to them then was a frustrating experience, crying for the wasted... Read full review »

Quality Control Problem

byallenwu Aug 11, 2002
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Right channel sound amazing
Cons Left channel sound awful
Recommended it? No

Poor quality control. How come a top of the line earphone have non-balance output right out of the box. Left channel vibrate and clip in low frequency, frequency respond at 15kHz drop off dramatically --> poor quality. Even a $10 sound better than it. (Maybe I'm just got bad luck) In the past, Sony... Sony's poor quality check !!! I much prefer Sony EX70s!!

bywiseguy211 Jun 8, 2002
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Comfort, flexible duct
Cons Clipping, Sound quality, price, cheap case, thin cord
Recommended it? No

Being a long-time EX-70 user (a year an a half), I decided to take my listening one step further by buying the 888. My EX-70 had poor cord that broke in half at SEVERAL place. Reliability was an issue since I use them extensively. I patched and patched and patched the cord but it didn't work out... Read full review »

Better than average with high clarity

6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Clear vocals and precise treble
Cons Default bass is weak
Recommended it? Yes

This review is after having listened to the headphones for 3-4 days.

I was a bit disappointed with the performance of these. They have very accurate sound with crisp treble. Too much high and too little low for my flavor. I'll compare the e888lp with a very similar product from another... Read full review »

Excellent Headphones

3 Helpfuls 4 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Sound Quality, Carrying Case, Comfort
Cons "break-in" time
Recommended it? Yes

I researched these headphones for weeks before talking myself into them, and I must say I am very, very impressed with them in every way. The carrying case always attracts attention, but not as much as the superior sound coming from these earbuds. I've never heard music this good, at all volume... Read full review »

Pros great sound
Cons not very useful case

I have 2 other cheaper earbud headphones both that were under $30 and these Sony earphones are louder and clearer. They are much better than the headphones that came with my portable cd player. I was surprised at the level of sound in these earbuds. It also works great with my Gameboy Advance. I... Read full review »

Sony MDR-E888LP --- music to my ears

bymortalcoil Jun 25, 2001
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Surprisingly good sound, good isolation, nice carrying case
Cons Seem a bit fragile
Recommended it? Yes

I've always despised the headphones that came with my Panasonic ShockWave portable CD player, but put off replacing them because they incorporate a built-in remote control. I finally decided that the convenience of the remote didn't make up for the poor sound quality and uncomforable fit, and... Read full review »

Disapponited ... Where's The Bass??

bybender65 May 13, 2001
6 Helpfuls 7 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Great crisp, clear highs and bright mids
Cons Only bass I experienced was when I held them in my ears and chewed walnuts.
Recommended it? No

Perhaps I expected too much from all the positive reviews I read both here and elsewhere. Although the highs and mids are really impressive with these buds, I am disappointed by the lack of bass response I experienced when using them with both my MiniDisc and RioVolt. Even after a few weeks of... Read full review »

Great unit.

Pros Compact design. High quality construction. Innovative carrying case.
Cons Price. If using over 2 hours, it could get uncomfortable.
Recommended it? Yes

When I bought my portable DVD player, I wanted a set of headphones to go with it. I didn't want the bulky headphones so I did some research on the "ear buds". I listened to several different sets of high end ear buds and I gotta say that the sound of the MDR-888LP is amazing. You really have to... Read full review »

Pros Amazing sound, simply the best ive seen, or heard.
Cons Only when you dont hear anybody talkin to you at all :).
Recommended it? Yes

The best headphones, sony does it again, great feel to the headphones, and great sound, even the base is great, and come with different earplug sizes to suit your needs. The only bad part is that they go in too deep into the ear, and..this may sound yucky..but they get all wax and stuff on them... Read full review »

The only pair of earphones worth buying.

I brought a pair of these to replace the painful and terrible sounding pair that came with Sony's MZR-900 MD player ( why is it that such a terrible pair of earphones bundled with a top of the line product?) after much deliberation, as it was the most expensive in the shop, but came highly... I bought a MZ-R900 from my local Sony operated Sony Pro Shop 3 weeks ago and one thing I didn't like was the headphones - they hurt (you can read about it in my review of the R900 at http://www.epinions.com/content_13279727236). For that past weeks I went through websites and reviews looking for a... Read full review »

After losing my last set of earbuds to a cat-related incident, I decided instead of cheap Sony phones I would see what Sony had to offer on the high end, as my wife and I had just purchased mp3 players for the gym. I surfed Sony's site, found these at the top of the list, and promptly purchased... Read full review »

Pros CRYSTAL clear sound ! They just sound better the more you use them !
Cons Seem rather fragile compared to less expensive headphones.
Recommended it? Yes

I recently purchased a pair of these headphones on a trip to Hong Kong and managed to save some money compared to the prices that others paid. Although I doubt that one would find these in Canada for any less then 95 dollars plus tax ( Gotta love the prices of electronics in Asia =) )
