A cheap offering from Sony which cuts down sound from immediate proximity
This is a neat looking microphone which draws its power from the camcorder via the hotshoe. There are two settings, zoom and gun which dramatically change the quality of sound on tape. The zoom setting alters the quality of the sound as you zoom onto a subject. (It gets thinner as you zoom in)

Sony ECM HS1 Microphone
For recording sound at a distance the ECM HS1 is much weaker than the microphone on my video camera. I was hoping it would amplify sounds from a distance, but it does not. It only eliminates sound nearby, but gives a very weak recording signal to the camera. I regret that I bought the ECM HS1. Read full review »
One thing they don't tell you: it's MONO
This is a pretty neat microphone that connects to your Sony DV camcorder via the hot-shoe, and has a nice "zoom" feature that allows you to focus on a distant subject easily.
