Great photos terrible build quality

Pros The image quality is outstanding..
Cons The focus gear problem is so bad. I believe a class action lawsuit is warranted
Recommended it? No

Unless you use this lens only once or twice a year , the cheap plastic gears will strip.  Sigma repair service is horrible. That repair will be a temporary solution. It WILL break again. Mine broke once a year every year for 4 years. And my freinds broke after one month. Read full review »

Pros Relatively sharp for the price.
Cons See review body.
Recommended it? No

I purchased this lens for wildlife photography and found it sharp although a tad heavy to handhold (I either used a mono or tripod). I sent the lens to Sigma for an upgrade for the D200. They informed me of impact damage. Unless it was damaged in transit I did not have any problems with the lens... Read full review »

Pros optical quality quiet focus motor durable construction focal range tripod mount doubles...
Cons filter cost slow lens F4-6.3 a sturdy tripod is almost required bulkiness of lens
Recommended it? Yes

The Sigma 50-500 mm lens is a very good lens. It has the ability to take a person through a large focal range, its main attracting point. The lens is large, 86 mm filter size and constructed out of durable materials. These features are the reason it weighs 4.1 pounds. It has become the main... Read full review »

Pros Price, Metal build, Fast AF & Crisp Quality Lens!
Cons Weight (for some)
Recommended it? Yes

I have a Fuji S2 and Nikon D1X digital SLR cameras. I am not a professional photographer (in that I dont make a living of my shooting). I do take the entire process including my equipment selection, technique and post-production work very seriously. When I was in the market for a good all-around... Read full review »

Pros It is the pro: you are the pro!
Cons HEAVY like non other: but quality!
Recommended it? Yes

What quality... like no other Sigma lens we own. Solid, clear, crisp photos on a Nikon D100. All AF functions work perfect. Comes with own case as well. The lens his HUGE and HEAVY 4lbs! But it beats the other plastic Sigma lens (this is all metal). Read full review »

Pros versatility, price
Cons optical quality may not be high enough to shoot very sharp slides
Recommended it? Yes

Sigma 50-500mm EX is a relatively new addition to the Sigma EX family. So far, I haven't heard too many reports concerning its reliability and performance. However, I think it is an interesting lens in terms of versatility and image quality. Let's point at the positive things first.

Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM SLD Ultra Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital DSLR Camera

Sigma's APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM is an advanced optical design of this 10x power high-performance zoom lens that covers the standard-to-super- telephoto range, now with the added advantage of Sigma's own Optical Stabilization which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Sigma is the only one to offer OS for Sony and Pentax mount where the image is stabilized in the viewfinder if chosen. For many photographers, having an all-in-one lens is an absolute dream. Especially for nature photographers, the idea of a lens suitable for landscape photography at the short end of the zoom range, while still having enough reach for wildlife is a great option. Add to that, the ability to close focus on small objects in the field such as flowers and it's the perfect backpackers' lens. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction & sharpness throughout the entire zoom range and super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. With no need to change lenses, there is less chance of dirt or moisture entering the camera and fouling the imaging sensor.
