Did the trick!

Pros inexpensive, convenient, compact
Cons not non-stick
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this product (under the White Westinghouse name -- same company) at least 7 years ago when I was a single (and poor) student. It served me (and my now husband and son) very, very well until last night when it bit the dust!

I would make basmati rice and, more recently, brown rice... Read full review »

Salton RA3 3-Cup Rice Cooker

Pros Small enough for two people, cooks up to 3 cups, cooks perfect every time.
Cons The tiny hole in the lid makes steam spray out and gets the area wet.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought my rice cooker because I wanted a small pan to cook the rice since I only cook for two now. With a built in timer, I do not have to hang around the kitchen to make sure the rice doesn't burn when the water runs out. This appliance shuts off automatically. The rice cooks perfectly each time... Read full review »

A good starter

Pros Good size for single person, cooks well
Cons Rice often sticks in mine, making it hard to clean; too small for parties
Recommended it? Yes

If you're a single or two-person household looking for your first rice cooker, this one will probably do you nicely. I've had mine for about a decade now and it's still running fine. However, because mine's a decade old, it doesn't have a non-stick lining and putting it in the dishwasher really... Read full review »

Pros Small enough for a 2 member home.
Cons No warming function, steam/water comes out the sides, hard to clean.
Recommended it? No

This is the second Salton rice cooker I've had. The first one was slightly larger and barely lasted a year. The second one was given to me for a wedding gift and also barely lasted a year. The same problem happened to both, the fuse blew out. (My husband took it apart and tested the connections)... Read full review »

Pros Cooks fast, size, price.
Cons unable to keep warm.
Recommended it? Yes

I'm Asian, I eat rice everyday, but my little rice cooker that my friend gave to me was broken, so I was looking for new one to buy. I live in USA only for temporary as an international student, so I didn't need a big, heavy, high-tech one. This "Salton Rice Cooker RA3" was just right to me. 3 cups... Read full review »

Darned good for the money

Pros Price
Cons Doesn't keep rice warm
Recommended it? Yes

I recently purchased this rice cooker - we love rice & for years I'd gotten by on the 'boiling bags'... but the price on this was too good to pass up. The first time I used the cooker, I ended up turning it off before the rice had completely cooked because the cooker was bubbling over & steaming... Read full review »

A Mini-Rice Cooker -- Asian Tested and Approved

bygsalelanonda Nov 27, 2000

Pros It cooks perfect rice and is small enough for the single person / couple
Cons It's kinda ugly and very traditional (for the asian household)
Recommended it? Yes

Lets face it. There are two kinds of rice cookers out there: the kind you find in upscale department stores and the kind you find in the traditional, 'stinky' asian markets. While this Chinese-made cooker might find its way into the former type of store, this model belongs firmly in the latter.

Takes the Guesswork Out of Cooking Rice

Pros Safer than cooking rice on the stove top. Amateur cooks can now make good rice.
Cons Leaves a wet mess on the counter top.
Recommended it? Yes

Before I had the Salton Rice Cooker I could not get the rice to come out right. Usually it was sticky and the wrong consistency. Plus I had to stand by the stove the whole time to make sure that the water didn't boil over and cause a kitchen fire! That all changed when I received the rice cooker... Read full review »

A Waste of Money

Pros Shuts itself off.
Cons See above.
Recommended it? No

There are three problems with this product:

1) It can barely manage to cook two portions of brown rice at a time

2) Steam/water shoots out the lid's sides and ends up all over the counter top

3) The bottom of the aluminum pot gets encrusted with sticky brown stuff... Read full review »

Smoke in the Kitchen

Pros Easy to use, cheap
Cons Unreliable, hard to clean
Recommended it? No

I bought the Salton 3-cup because it was the cheapest one at Target. It is faster than my old Handy Steamer for cooking rice, but the Handy Steamer is 7 years old and still going strong. I went through two of these Salton cookers in less than a year. Not once, but twice. An odor of fried electronic... Read full review »
