Saga Frontier: A new frontier of RPGing

byRedLineX Dec 20, 1999

Pros Free scenerio system, seven characters to play,
Cons Very confusing, takes a lot of time to learn and get in to
Recommended it? Yes

Saga Frontier isn?t your typical RPG. It gives the player the freedom to explore and go anywhere you want in the game?s world. On top of that there are seven different stories to choose from. There is Blue who is trying to become the best magician in the world, Emelia who wants to avenge the murder... Read full review »

Almost, but not quite, as much fun as grating cheese

Pros Stunning graphics, decent music and sound
Cons Poor control, weak execution of 'open-ended' concept
Recommended it? No

One big factor separates the world of console role-playing games from the traditional table-top games they descend from. Namely, the right to choose your own option. For the most part, you ca do whatever you'd like in a table-top game, but you are limited by the story in a video game. However, as... Read full review »

Steer Clear of this game......

Pros graphics
Cons everything else (horrible plot for an rpg)
Recommended it? Yes

Well, what can I say? As rpgs go, Saga Frontier is the bad apple out of the bunch. Sure, it has a "freedom" environment and a "non-linear" storyline, but Square carries it too far. Many times during the gameplay, I was at a loss of where to go. There are eight different quests, each jam packed into... Read full review »

This Game Doesn't Suck As Bad As People Say.

Pros Combo attacks, non-linearity of gameplay, credits room.
Cons Graphics
Recommended it? Yes

There's a lot of bad press flying around about this game. I guess it's because of all the high-quality stuff that Square has put out, and so that's what they expected...high quality graphics, and a really polished feel. Instead, Square tried to go for an expansive, non-linear storyline. People... Read full review »

I Really Never Got Why People Don't Like SaGa Frontier ...

Pros Asellus' Quest and the sidequests for magic
Cons Some of the characters are a little on the ugh side and the music's average
Recommended it? Yes

I have a theory of why people hate SaGa Frontier so much. Drum roll please.

It came out right after Final Fantasy 7

Okay, though we'd all love every game to be as incredible as FF7, and as much as we'd like to wish Squaresoft can make a low budget... Read full review »

Pros Decent graphics
Cons Everything else.
Recommended it? No

What's wrong with linearity? I've never understood why many people despise it (linear means straight-forward, you play the game the way the designers wanted you to) in RPGs. I myself to not mind linearity in my RPGS. After all, some of the greatest ones, Xenogears, Front Mission 3, Final Fantasy... Read full review »

Pros The non-linear gameplay is outstanding and the learning way is fun
Cons story is hardly existant too short
Recommended it? Yes

Saga Frontier is one of the most criticized games among the gaming community. Many people that are close-minded and that won't accept anything from anyone (especially Squaresoft) that isn't completely "a Final Fantasy clone", so this is completely expected.
However, I believe the aspects that... Read full review »

Seven times the adventure, one seventh the fun

Pros unique advancement system
Cons poor graphics & sound, odd gameplay, repetitive
Recommended it? No

The biggest selling point of SaGa Frontier was the "revolutionary" multi-threaded story, in which you choose from seven characters and story plotlines to take you through the same. While the stories are different and interesting, the actual game, however, is not, and that's what makes this system... Read full review »

Saga frontier is a very unique game, it happened to be one of the games that came shortly after Final Fantasy 7, and since it was Squaresoft too many people rushed to buy it. Well needless to say alot of people was dissapointed as previous reviews point out, but it really is a great game which you... Read full review »

Pros Addicting gameplay, beautiful graphics, innovative in US RPGs.
Cons Not enough storyline.
Recommended it? Yes

Often considered to be one of Square's biggest failures outside Secret of Evermore, SaGa Frontier was a smash hit in Japan, and with good reason. The continuation of the immensely popular Romancing SaGa series was the first of which to be released in the US under the franchise title (Final Fantasy... Read full review »
