Return To Oz: Not The Munchkin-Infested Land You Remember
Ever wonder what happened to Dorothy Gale and the world of Oz? Writer Frank L. Baum provided an answer in Ozma of Oz (on which this film was almost totally based save for some situations and characters from The Marvelous Land of Oz), but so did Walt Disney in the 1985 film Return To Oz.

The Twisted Oz
We're not in Kansas any more. Oz will never be the same. Return To Oz is the sequel to the movie that we all hold dear to our hearts, The Wizard Of Oz. Return To Oz is a darker, more sinister take on Oz.
It's a twisted tale that's almost morbid, when compared to The Wizard Of Oz, which...

Chickens, Pumpkins, Mechanical Soldiers! Oh My! Talking Rocks, Head Switching, Men on Wheels! Oh brother!
As a child I remember one of my fondest memories was watching The Wizard of Oz. Every year it seemed, the Wizard of Oz was shown on broadcast television right around the perfect time when families would curl up in knit blankets next to a blazing fire and enjoy a trip over the rainbow. There were... Read full review »
A Bit Weird, but I Still Like It! (Nostalgia W/O)
I had a lot of trouble picking a topic because there were just too many things to choose from, but I finally have settled on Return to Oz as the topic for my own entry to the Nostalgia Write-Off I am currently hosting.
My grandmother picked up several of L. Frank Baum's "Oz" books at a...

This dark world needs a heroine
Taking place after the events of "Wizard of Oz", at the end of the 19th century, eleven year old Dorothy Gale (Fairuza Balk) is back in good ole Kansas with her Aunty Em (Piper Laurie) and Uncle Henry (Matt Clarke). Her stories of her adventure in the magical land of Oz cause great distress to her... Read full review »
My kinda Oz
I'll probably be stoned for saying this, but I've never been a fan of Judy Garland's The Wizard of Oz. I don't think it's a bad movie, but the sunny, sing a long disposition and sugary tone make my teeth ache. I'm far from a "dark" person, but too much happy gets on my nerves.
Return to Oz...

If only Tim Burton had directed this....
Then it would have been even MORE twisted and creepy and dark and wonderful! This is one of only ten or so movies we owned when we first got our VCR, and we wore it out watching it. There are things in this movie that will give you nightmares, but even more things that make it a beautiful fantasy... Read full review »
Darker and more faithful...
I just watched this movie again last night for the first time a very long time. When I was a kid, I was never much of a fan of "The Wizard of Oz" with Judy Garland because I was never much of a fan of musicals or sickly sweet movies even as a kid. But I was a fan of teh actual Oz books by L. Frank... Read full review »
No rainbows here
First of all, I want to be clear that I have not read any of L. Frank Baum's books, and my opinion here is based solely on watching "Return to Oz" and comparing the two films, "The Wizard of Oz" and "Return to Oz."
Creating a sequel to the classic "The Wizard of Oz" is an idea almost as...

Return to the magic. I do.
Return to Oz is the wonderfully done second part to the epic story of Dorothy and her adventures in Oz. As the story goes she returns to Oz to find the Emerald City not in the best of shape. The wicked Princess Mombi and the evil Nome King now rule the city. With help of a robot-man (tic-toc),... Read full review »

Return to Oz DVD
This sequel to THE WIZARD OF OZ adheres to author L. Frank Baum's wonderful fantasy novels as Dorothy returns to Oz where she battles a powerful Gnome King and a vain witch. Helping her are a cute robot named Tik Tok a gangly jack 'o' lantern and a talking chicken. Some material may be frightening for very young children. Academy Award Nominations: Best Visual Effects.
