Pros Its very accurate, and comfortable.
Cons Mainly the price.
Recommended it? Yes

Hi – I just wanted to give a quick update on the A5 heart rate monitor.

After over 3 years of use I STILL love it. I now completely rely on it and hate to be without it during a workout.

The elastic band that goes around your chest still has plenty of life in it. I'm surprised... Read full review »

Why get a heart rate monitor?
I started looking for a heart rate monitor last summer. I was training for a triathlon and wanted to know how my perceived exertion measured up with my actual exertion. Enter the heart rate monitor. Among other things, heart rate monitors are really good at... Read full review »

I've had mine for 18 months...

Pros Sensible feature set for exercising
Cons Can't replace battery in chest strap. Wish it had a maximum heart rate memory.
Recommended it? Yes

My primary purpose for getting a Heart Rate Monitor was for checking my rate while "spinning" at the gym. I also ride outdoors and use my monitor there as well.

In case you don't know, spinning is a group exercise done on special stationary bicycles, with a leader, done to music. Each... Read full review »

Pros - high quality stuff - looks quite ok - graphical screen
Cons - elapsed time and heart beat not shown together - only 1 exercise file
Recommended it? Yes

I bought the polar A5 in Jan 2002. I did a fair amount of research before I made the purchase. I was looking for a reliable heart beat monitor that had the basic functions, not all the advanced pc interface and training program stuff. The real entry level models like the polar a3 or some of the $50... Read full review »

Pros Good basic features. Works as advertised.
Cons NO SPLIT TIMES. User Interface is kind of complicated.
Recommended it? Yes

This is a very popular middle of the line model, according to my research before purchasing it. I didn't really know what features I needed with an HRM. Now that I've been using it for several months, I realize one major feature that I overlooked. This watch will not record split times, so you... Read full review »

Pros Reliability, Downloading to Polar Precision Software, Wearlink Chest Strap, Lots of...
Cons Price, Inferior Power Option, no rear wheel transmitter, no elapsed distance display...
Recommended it? Yes

Polar has established themselves as THE BRAND for heart rate monitors (HRM). I'm sure there are other HRM's that work just as well as Polar but my personal experiences with other brands have always made me more impressed with Polar's reliable and feature rich products. Before buying the S720i I had... Read full review »

Cons it only worked occasionally

I bought this item to evaluate my workout while commuting to work. For brief periods it did what it was advertised to do.
6 months after buying it I returned it to POLAR to be repaired ($10 battery) it is not a do it yourself job. It was returned promptly operating for another 9 months. When I... Read full review »

Pros Very useful, nice look, affordable.
Cons Difficult to setup, only one run/workout memory, not easy to transport without starting...

I'm used to Japanese watches with a lot of options and features. Now, they are very easy to setup and to configure. If you get the Polar A5 don't expect the same easy of use. The screen is empty and provides less than minimum information. When the heart rate monitor has been started is very... Read full review »

Pros none
Cons poor service

I had this watch for less than 6 months, it froze, would not work. I sent it back to the factory, over 10 weeks later, it was returned. It continues to beep, constantly, I returned it again, 4 weeks later, it still makes horrid noise. This is the most annoying product. I have purchased a different... Read full review »

This is my third heart rate monitor and it serves me very well. I bought it new $50 on an auction website few months ago. I am a heavy user, working out at least 5 times a week in a gym. Other pricy monitors I used were not as consistent as this Polar A5. They were easily interrupted by other... Read full review »
