Prefatory note #1: You can find great deals on this DVD player via various vendors. For example, as of this writing, Bestbuy.com has this model "on sale" for only $59.49 (you must "temporarily place the item in your shopping cart" to see its discounted price). I phoned my neighborhood Best Buy... Read full review »

Pros Very affordable very versatile upscaling DVD player.
Cons No optical out, no single frame fast forward or reverse, chintzy remote.
Recommended it? Yes

I am not ready yet to make the jump to Blu - Ray or HD-DVD. I've taken home and tried each of these players, and decided to wait some more to see who wins the war. I don't even have a 1080P HDTV yet, so I really wouldn't get the full benefit of either new technology anyway.

Cons Poor remote, cheap LCD display, not easy to use, stutters on some DivX files

I have had the original king of DivX, a.k.a. Philips DVP642 for a while and considering its impressive feature list (including PAL playback on NTSC TV, DivX playback and progressive scan), I was relatively happy with it for $41 that I paid. I was not happy with it overall however, and would not... Read full review »

Pros The price for an upconversion dvd player.
Cons Malfunctions in a short time.
Recommended it? No

I purchased this dvd player in Feb '08 for an RCA tv...to no avail.  10 months later, I hooked it up to my old school Magnavox tv via RF mod.  For 2 months it worked fine; then suddenly, the player began to play games...fortunately, I was able to get my dvd disc out.

I turned the player off;... Read full review »

The DVP 5982 initially seemed OK- the image quality for JPEG's was less than I had hoped. My main reason for purchasing was to try and display photo slideshows from a USB stick with HDTV resolution. No surprise, the 'upgrading' feature produces 480p quality of images only. DivX function was... Read full review »

I bought the Phillips Dvp5982 player at Wal-mart because I needed a new one.  The only thing I don't like about this product is that if you lose your remote, you can't fast forward or rewind from the front of the dvd player. Read full review »
