Pros Price, connectivity, HDMI and upconversion, features, PAL/NTSC, computer video playback,...
Cons LCD and remote could be better there are better choices for straight DVD playback
Recommended it? Yes

I have been using the Philips DVP642 DVD player and it excelled at playing DivX, PAL, AVI and MPEG. But the remote control was horrible and the picture quality while playing store-bought DVDs was not the best. So I got the new and improved version - Philips DVP5960 that was supposed to improve the... Read full review »

Pros Great HDTV picture
Cons Analog audio output muted for DTS soundtracks
Recommended it? Yes

The rumor that the new Philips DVP5960 has corrected the bugs that plagued the Philips DVP5900 upscaling DVD player appears to be true! Also, the DVP5960 produces a much better picture than the DVP5900. The DVP5960 is "DivX Ultra" certified. I've tried upscaling DVD players from Sony, Samsung, and... Read full review »

Pros HDMI Image, remote
Cons Too many bugs and defects as stated in the review.
Recommended it? No

I must say that in the past I have been using a lot of Philips products from Electronics to Sonicare to most of my Kitchen Small Appliances and have been very happy with them ... until the past few years. The latest unit I have purchased is the DVP5900 DivX with HDMI connection and it is a... Read full review »

A tradeoff between format compatibility and function

Pros Plays virtually any format, looks nice, cheaper than other HDMI players.
Cons Some controls are a major inconvenience
Recommended it? Yes

I wholeheartedly agree with all the reviewers who prasied this player for multi-format playback, USB port, HDMI output and all of it for around $ 70. Impressive. On top of that, this unit has PAL to NTSC converter, and it is very easy to change region codes on Philips players (see, for example,... Read full review »

This is a keeper

Pros Full Feature, Quality HDMI video
Cons Remote Control
Recommended it? Yes

Philips started being part of the HDMI DVD market in 2005 with the introduction of the DVP5900 player which was a failure in all. For 2006, Philips replaced it with a newer model, the DVP5960, and what a difference. I am very happy to say that they have learned from their experience and that they... Read full review »

The Good and the Bad: Fair Warning

Pros Plays DivX-, most XviD-encoded AVIs.<br> HDMI with video upscaling.
Cons HDMI and coaxial digital audio out DO NOT work together.
Recommended it? No

The DVP 5900 is definitely an upgrade to the older DVP 642, by virtue of the HDMI interface and through it the ability to upscale DVDs to 720p and 1080i. But as HDMI and upscaling is this model's big selling point, it is also its biggest stumbling block. According to Philips Customer Support, it is... Read full review »

Pros I got to watch one DVD before the unit broke! WOW!
Cons I got to watch one DVD before the unit broke! WOW!
Recommended it? No

I purchased this unit to replace a Sony unit. I also purchased the Philips 19" LCD HDTV with HDMI. I set up the TV and DVP and what a great picture. I went to open the tray and nothing would happen. I could hear the motor running but nothing would happen. I had to remove the dvd to return it and I... Read full review »

Pros Sleek design, well-designed and laid out remote, great viewing features.
Cons No backlight on remote; no frame advance mode.
Recommended it? Yes

I purchased this product to enhance viewing DVDs on my new LCD HiDef television. At first I didn't understand that I wouldn't get a high-definition experience with the player and its included cables. I was disappointed that the picture displayed much smaller than the full-screen of the television... Read full review »

The USB feature makes it all worthwhile

Pros Reliable. The USB port is a killer feature. Cheap!
Cons Cheap! Very light. AWFUL remote.
Recommended it? Yes

As a DVD player, this unit doesn't excel. It has a small and finicky remote, slow navigation and loading, is intolerant of scratches and a terrible remote. I mention the remote twice because it really is bad. There's only a small window in which it works consistently, otherwise the player doesn't... Read full review »

Decent overall, terrible Xvid and MP3 support

byfour-14 Apr 28, 2007

Pros Fine vanilla DVD player, handles scratched discs OK
Cons Xvid support terrible, mp3s must all be in one folder
Recommended it? No

I needed a basic replacement for my Panasonic DVD player which developed a bad spindle motor. I have a plain old analog TV, so I care naught for HDTV, HDMI, upconversion. My primary requirement was for good handling of scratched discs (I visit the library alot), secondary was MP3 support.
