Pros Good feature set, simple and reliable operation, good recording quality
Cons Annoying copy-protection limitations, lack of battery backup, slow operation with DVD...
Recommended it? Yes

This Philips video recorder was one of the first with a built-in digital tuner, an update mandated by the FCC for all new models sold in the USA after March 1, 2007. It features a 160 Gbyte hard disk drive, direct recording and high-speed dubbing to both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs, and... Read full review »

Best of the 2007 ATSC DVD Recorders

bycomparator Jun 29, 2007
18 Helpfuls 19 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? 3 Comments
Pros Hard drive provides chase play and 66 hours of programs in default record mode.
Cons Doesn't record or pass through high def, can't manually add channels.
Recommended it? Yes

This unit, purchased a couple of weeks ago, is the sixth ATSC DVD recorder I've owned in 2007. The first five went back; this one, at least so far, is a keeper.

I get television strictly via over-the-air, as opposed to cable or satellite. My ATSC DVD recorder buying spree began in March,... Read full review »

Impressive recorder for DVD and DVR use

byjvolzer Feb 12, 2008

Pros Digital tuner, DVR with no subscription, pause live TV, simultaneous record & playback,...
Cons tedious titling, no timer titles, no DL, no way to group or organize harddrive recordings
Recommended it? Yes

The Philips DVDR3575H is a DVD recorder and a 160 GB hard drive DVR in one unit offering 1080p upconvert capabilities and a digital/analog tuner.

Background:
I’ve stepped up to the DVDR3575H from an older Philips recorder, the DVDR75 that’s at least a few years old. It’s interesting... Read full review »

This Philips is Not A Screwdriver

byrallynow Jan 9, 2008

Pros Excellent recording capacity; easy to see menus on screen
Cons Small remote buttons; manual needs to be studied; no titling recording until it's...
Recommended it? Yes

UPDATE: I have now owned it for 10 weeks and have NO defects to report. I still have no complaints except, as mentioned originally, it is not an intuitive machine and the manual has to be kept close if you want to be innovative, change quality of recordings (to have more time on the disk), or... Loved the product, the 30 days it worked

Pros When it works, the product is awesome
Cons After the first 30 days, it stopped working and the customer service is horrible
Recommended it? No

I did a lot of research (2-3 months) last spring before I found the dvdr I wanted. An HDD big enough and a DVD recorder to burn stuff. So I spent $300 and got the Phillips, a decent brand.

The first month it worked beautifully. Everything was golden. All features worked perfectly. Then... Read full review »

Pros Recording quality good. HDD great. Editing not too time consuming once you're used...
Cons Can have bad spots on the harddrive. Alittle hard to learn..Keep the book handy at1st.
Recommended it? Yes

For a really comprehensive and detailed review on the product details and specs see the review by Ames100, it's very thorough. I wrote this to touch on a few points he might have missed, as well as to help the "new to DVD recorders" get started if they buy one.

This recorder works as... Read full review »

GOOD PRODUCT, BAD COMPANY POLICY

byginagina43 Jun 21, 2008

Pros A good product; functional and easy-to-use.
Cons Buy a new one today, get a used ("refurbished") replacement tomorrow!
Recommended it? No

This is a good product. Functional and easy to use. I just happen to get a defective one. My complaint is not with the recorder but with Philips' return policy which in my opinion is dishonest.

After set-up I noticed that timed recordings were starting progressively later the further out... Read full review »

Pros Good size, good play back, good price, low maintenance
Cons None as of yet
Recommended it? Yes

Ok, here's the scoop on one of the best DVD players out there in the market. It is small, yet not to small. I will fit in about any entertainment set that you own or on top of the TV. It plays DVD beautifully and never lets dust in. It will play movies even with minor scratches. I love this product... Read full review »

This is the one I had been waiting for!

Pros No need to use discs.
Cons Buttons on remote are really small.
Recommended it? Yes

I have been wanting a TIVO that works off the air for a few years now. That and the fact that my VCR broke in the summer of 2006, and I wasn't going to get another one with an analog tuner with the digital TV being just around the corner. So I waited until something good came along, and this is it... Read full review »

Some Caveats

bydgrimes Feb 12, 2009
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Hard Drive Recording, ATSC tuner.
Cons Lots to list: No pgm guide, menus, URC support, cannot delete ATSC sub-channels, more.
Recommended it? No

This recorder suffered in the early stages, but recent firmware changes have helped.  However, even the latest firmware lacks in features that should be standard on an ATSC/QAM/DVR/DVD recorder.

I use this device for free Over-The-Air, ATSC (digital) television reception and DVD playback.  I... Read full review »
