Pros Great Resolution, Cheap, and Lightweight
Cons For $120, none except the lack of an aperture ring
Recommended it? Yes

The Nikon AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6G Zoom Lens is a compact and lightweight telephoto zoom featuring excellent resolution, dependable performance, a nine blade iris diaphragm (for enhanced Bokeh and improved contrast), and "D" type precision distance measurement for auto focus accuracy and improved flash... Bargain price, bargain results

Pros Bargain price
Cons Toy-like build, plastic mount
Recommended it? Yes

I purchased this lens, the Nikkor 70-300G (not D), thinking it would be a reasonable addition to my arsenal, for pictures requiring a longer lens. I used it for about 4 months. When I received it, I was more than a little disappointed at the toy-like build quality, which you can't really tell by... Read full review »

Nikon 70-300mm "G"lens is a very good value .

Pros Great resolution and color, light weight and inexpensive.
Cons Slow focusing in low light and too slow focusing for sports.
Recommended it? Yes

Being a long time 35mm photographer I was thrilled when I got my first Nikon,a few years ago. I got a N80 and an off brand 28-200 lens, to save money. What a mistake! The lens gave me nothing but trouble. The focus went soft after 6 months of casual use. The barrel crept down when I carried the... Read full review »

Beginner lens at a great price

Pros Great price; decent quality; 300mm
Cons plastic mount; somewhat noisy autofocus
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this lens because I was looking for a decent lens for my Nikon D70 that zoomed to 300mm, but I didn't want to spend a fortune (easy to do). I checked out the ED version of this lens and was somewhat underwhelmed at the image difference when compared to the non-ED version (this lens). This... Read full review »

Telephoto great

Pros Clear Photos, smooth movement
Cons A little trouble focusing at distance in low light, no depth of field scale
Recommended it? Yes

Great lens, great price! Apertures range from f4 to f45. It does have some trouble with automatic focusing at a distance in low light but this is to be expected. I simply switch to manual control and the pictures are right on. Low price doesn?t mean low quality. This lens has Nikon?s legendary... Read full review »

Pros Good value, Good Quality
Cons Slow Focus
Recommended it? Yes

Great cheap lens for all sorts of events and. Don't waste your money on the VR for this price. Great up too 200mm then focus drops off from then so don't expect a great picture at 300mm of a sports event but landscapes, animals are fantastic at any distance. Read full review »

An excellent accessories for the D70 (and D50).

byke8yy Nov 4, 2005
4 Helpfuls 5 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros inexpensive, long range, light weight
Cons not as rugged or contrasty as the more expensive ED series
Recommended it? Yes

The AF 70-300 isn't quite the equal of Nikon's ED 80-300 zoom, but its resolution and contrast is more than adequate for for the current series of Prosumer digital cameras from Nikon, and that's squarely the market they've aimed it at. Together with the 28-70mm zoom packaged with the D70, it... Read full review »

Should you buy the 70-300mm Nikon?

Pros Good for amatuers
Cons Slow, bulky, ect
Recommended it? Yes

This is not a bad lens, if you are on a budget. I have compared this lens and the 75-300, and like the older 75-300 better. Both of these lenses are not the best lenses in the world, first of all, but they will get by if you are an amateur or beginner. If you cannot find a 75-300, then this lens... Read full review »

Pros Price. Easy to find used.
Cons Build quality, softness above 200mm, contrast.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this lens used as I needed a long zoom lens for portrait (I'm sparing money to buy the sigma 70-200 EX HSM...)

It's not very crisp (I find it even soft above 200mm), colors and contrast are not the best but remember it's a 100$ zoom... It's still better than the lens that any... Read full review »
