The F100--Nikon's Newest "PRO" SLR

byHoward_Creech Oct 6, 1999

Pros Fast accurate Auto Focus, Compact size, Professional Quality
Cons None at all
Recommended it? Yes

Pro and serious amateur photographers like to call the F100 the F5 "lite" or the "Baby" F5 but I think the F100 is a solid camera in its own right. The F100 was designed as a professional l camera with a truckload of features packed into a moderate sized camera body. The F100 was conceived from the... Read full review »

Pros Light yet rugged and robust, loads of features for serious amateurs & pros
Cons After 2 yrs, I'm still trying to find a good one, worthy for mention.
Recommended it? Yes

**First Impression on Features, Handling and Operations**
The Nikon F100 is an incredible camera! It is rugged, but light (about the same in weight as the N90s, yet thinner). It's very comfortable to hold, much better than the N90s, in terms of ergonomics and feel. If you are considering of... Read full review »

Is Newer Necessarily Better?

Pros Evolutionary camera in a long line of great Nikon bodies
Cons It still can't read my mind yet!
Recommended it? Yes

Well, what can say about the F100 that hasn't already been said in numerous other opinions? Having owned Nikon equipment since 1978, I guess my perspective is that of a professional who has upgraded his Nikon equipment over the years and seen the improvements made with each model.

Pros Outstanding Features, Lighter than the F5, excellent metering and AF systems
Cons It's not the F5. Other than that, NONE!
Recommended it? Yes

This is another of the exceptionally well designed and thought out cameras provided to photographers by Nikon. It is a very capable camera that takes advantage of Nikon's years of experience, exceptional quality lenses, the world famous "F" lens mount and world class engineering.

If you can't afford the F5

Pros small, light, rugged
Cons not the F5
Recommended it? Yes

If, like me, you can't afford the F5, this is your best bet. And, just to make you feel better, it's smaller and lighter than the F5. It does not have the trick view finder on top so you can shoot from the hip, but hey, we cant' have it all. Otherwise, this camera is razor sharp. You barely have to... Read full review »

Pros WELL BUILT, FAST FOCUSING
Cons SHOULD HAVE MIRROR LOCK UP
Recommended it? Yes

I have been a NIKON fan for over 30 years. Starting with the original f model [which i still own] right up to the f100. As age has reduced my focusing ability a bit the switch to auto focus became an interesting option.

I must admit i was a bit overly concerned about the high tech... Read full review »

Excellent choice for an amateur photographer

Pros Responsive, control placement, features, metering
Cons Autofocus loses subject at times, metering not good in extreme light conditions
Recommended it? Yes

I purchased the Nikon F100 after I improved greatly in photography. My first SLR camera was a Minolta XTsi with two lenses. They were slow to focus and sometimes I had trouble getting the shots that I wanted. The viewfinder was dark, and the camera operation wasn't as smooth as I had like.

Pros Features, Speed of unit, Balance of unit.
Cons No mirror lockup. Could be $200 less.
Recommended it? Yes

There a lot of recommendations on the F100, so I?ll try not to focus too much on what other people have said. Instead, I?ll discuss the camera and bring in some of the similarities and differences between the F100 and the N80, N90.

Before my daughter was born I was preparing to document,... Read full review »

If nothing else Nikon has learned the importance of constantly re-engineering their products. The benefits from these efforts are showing up even in the less expensive offering in the Nikon line. The F100 is the beneficiary of this wealth of technology know how. The use of an visible red indicator... Read full review »
