Pros Build quality, ease of use, menu and flash
Cons User manual, software
Recommended it? Yes

The Nikon D80 is just a sensational camera , well made, easy to use , even better than the D70 - and I thought that was good! The menu is really excellent, the flash is more powerful than the D70 and the battery life is as good. The only grizzle I have is the user manual -it almost looks as if its... Read full review »

Firstly this is the camera replacement for the venerable D50. Primed before release to be called the "D60" Nikon decided instead on the "D40" name.

Accordingly announced on November16,2006, it steps up to the plate to go squarely against the Canon XT. This pint size DSLR has been a great... Read full review »

Cons sometimes, too flexible SD card plastic kit lens mount no dust removal
Recommended it? Yes

After looking hard at the Canon Rebel XT, Olympus, and Sony offerings, including several hands-on sessions, I chose the Nikon as the best photographer's camera. It just feels right. It also takes remarkable pictures. The kit lens is quite good given reasonable light, and covers a wide range for... Read full review »

Great camera for novice and pro alike

Pros Long battery life, fast auto zoom, clear pics with kit lens
Cons Eventually, photo imaging software needed to get the most out of your pictures.
Recommended it? Yes

I'll start of by stating that I am not a professional photographer, but more like a pro-hobbyist who enjoys photography. I am a father who wants to truly enjoy the "life" of the photos that I take. I am also a police detective who decided that the department supplied "throw down" camera did not do... Read full review »

On par or better than the competition

Pros Compact body, bright and large viewfinder, easy to use, decent low-light performance
Cons Matrix Metering *different* than other Nikons like D70s or D200

EDIT 7/13/2007. I've learned some more since I wrote this review, particularly in terms of noise performance of the current Nikon offerings. Most sites will show JPG noise performance out of camera in default settings. When compared this way, the best to worst are D40x, D40, D50, D80, D200, D70s,... Read full review »

Pros Light. Quick. Inexpensive. Quality and quantity that won't break the bank.
Cons Light. No top LCD. Small frame. Almost obsolete thanks to D40x.
Recommended it? Yes

I've been shooting with my D40 for about a month now and I have to say I'm not as disappointed as I thought I'd be. Sounds weird saying it like that, but I was planning on getting the D80. When I settled for the D40 I was afraid I'd be settling too much. I was wrong.

The D40 is a great... Read full review »

Pros Fast, accurate and priced right
Cons none yet!!!
Recommended it? Yes

The D80 is easily the best digital camera I have ever owned. I upgraded from the D100 and the difference is night and day. The D80 has a fast accurate auto focus and takes all of my old Nikon F mount lenses (so there is no need to purchase new lenses). There is no shutter lag and w/ a high speed... Read full review »
