Very good, especially for the price.
I purchased the Nikon D40 (w/ 18-55mm lens) about 2 years ago. It was my first DSLR. To this day, it has about 30,000 actuations (i.e., I've snapped the shutter about 30,000 times) and it's still going as if new. It takes beyond exceptional photos and is certainly better than most point and shoots... Read full review »
Nikon D-40 Rocks My World!
I received this product as a gift for my sixteenth birthday, and have had an awesome time playing around with it and learning all of the fun extras that are included in it. The Nikon D-40 is an easy to use, digital SLR camera which comes with one lens which has 18-55mm zoom. It produces... Read full review »
I like it!
I use this camera at home. It is pretty easy to use, you can use it as a manual or on auto. It is hard to take out with you, because it is big and bulky. It does seem to have a short battery life as well. Other than that it takes great pictures and it is great for a beginner. Read full review »
Great starter DSLR with full controls
This is my first dslr. It takes outstanding pictures in Auto mode, and in manual mode you have full control over the camera which is great for anyone wanting to expand their photography skills. I love the program modes as well, aperature priority and shutter priority which gives the user the... Read full review »
Great for amateur photographers
This is a great, quality camera for an amateur photographer. It has lots of presets, but you can also choose to adjust the shutter speed and aperature yourself. In addition, in the menu there are tons of other adjustments that can be made, such as black and white pictures, or changing the... Read full review »
Love my Nikon
I bought my Nikon D40 because I wanted a DSLR camera that was not too expensive and would give me a way to take professional looking pictures without the expensive professional equipment. It is really easy to use and with all the included features & options, you can easily take beautiful... Read full review »
Take your pix to the next level!
I own this camera and just love it. I wanted a digital SLR for ages, and finally Nikon made one I could afford. Fully automatic or manual settings let you take control or let the camera do its thing--your choice. Takes beautiful high rez shots. I use it for everything--business and pleasure. Great... GREAT camera!
I have had this camera for about a year now, and I love everything about it. I do only use it at home because it is a bit bulky to travel around with. I use it for taking photos for my business, and it does a wonderful job. I am no expert at digital photography, so this camera... Read full review »
Nikon d40
For a dslr it's really basic, but it's great for beginners. Having learned on a classic film slr camera, I sometimes found that I couldn't manipulate the d40 as well as I would have liked. Also, I don't know what it is but sometimes the AF doesn't work right and it's really irritating. However,... Read full review »
Fabulous!
I purchased this camera to take on a 2007 cruise. Without a doubt, it's the best camera I've ever owned! Add a few high quality lenses and you are set. Read full review »
Great for starters!
My husband bought this for me a year ago and I have still to learn everything there is to know about this camera! I'm finally getting into the manual modes, but the auto works great for any picture taker! This is great for beginners and for people who have been doing this a long time. I would... Great upgrade from a point and shoot.
If you're ready to upgrade from a point and shoot, but you don't want something super expensive and complicated this may be the camera for you. I found it intuitive and fairly easy to use. The biggest drawback of this camera is the number of autofocus sensors. With only three... Read full review »
Logical upgrade from a Point and Shoot
I've only had it for a week but I simply love it. Easy to shoot in Auto modes - nearly a "point and shoot", but with excellent optics and picture resolution. The 18 to 55 mm lens is a very good range for casual shooting, but I have the 55 to 200 mm lens on order for more distance. Search as I can,... Read full review »
Great Camera!
I wanted to take better quality pictures and I bought the right camera! The D40 takes excellent, clear pictures, even on the auto settings. Easy to use for beginners. A little heavy, but most DSLR's are, right? Wish it had a video feature like the newer Nikon's. Read full review »
I'm a novice and I can use it!
First I spend a load of money on a professional dslr. After a few years of frustration, I gave up, sold it, and replaced it with this camera. It takes beautiful pictures. This is a great camera for someone who wants the crisp, clear, quality images, but doesn't have the knowledge... Read full review »
Great camera for everday use
This is a great dslr. It can be used in fully auto mode, or fully manual. I use this as my everyday camera. While I can't stick in into my pocket, I love that it feels like a real camera in my hands. Once you have a dslr it's hard to use anything else! Read full review »
My Best Purchase as a Mommy!
This camera is my best friend since becomming a Mommy. We purchased this camera when our first child was 4 months old, at the recommendation of a photographer/friend. I had previously been intimidated by SLR cameras, but my old point and shoot had died, and I forced myself to branch out! I am sooo... Read full review »
Discontinued but phenomenal, skip the new D3000 and find a D40
Skip purchasing the new Nikon D3000, which replaced the D40, and just go online or to your photo store and find an old stock D40. The D40 is superior at higher ISO, with the 3000 generating more noise at the higer ISO levels, most notably at 800 and 1600.
For the money, if you're an...
