Wireless router saga ends with Netgear

bytjgaskell Jan 29, 2005
10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Actually holds a connection! As if that were too much to ask of a router
Cons Something that may affect you in the future--it's not Wi-Fi certified.
Recommended it? Yes

My saga started when I was about to move in with a friend, who was not keen on my running wires throughout her house so that we could both share Comcast high-speed cable. I figured, no problem, I'll just go wireless--the technology is pretty cheap these days. As with many new things, it wasn't that... Read full review »

G for Good wireless router

Pros Easy to setup, long range
Cons G Transfer rate is not much more than B version
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this router for use as an access point because it was on sale for the same or less then the access point box (wg602). I was going to go for the cheaper B protocol router but the hi-tech urge pushed me toward the wgr614.

I've had some networking experiences and the setup was easy... Read full review »

Pros Good signal strength. Easy setup. Eye-pleasing design.
Cons Router is plagued by overheating problems which result in connection failure.
Recommended it? No

This is an extended-use review. I've had this router for nine months. The first six months were trouble-free and I kept the router on for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In the seventh month, I began having problems with dropped internet connections and a non-operational home network... Read full review »

Pros Looks Sharp!
Cons Works terribly. Needs babysitting. No power button.
Recommended it? No

I gave up on this router after only about two weeks. It's unreliable, and even when it works, it has problems.

Setup was fairly easy, which was already disappointing since my previous router was trivial to set up. But I had it up and running in an hour or so. Then I noticed that any web... Read full review »

Upgraded from an old router to the new WGR614 v7, love it!

Pros Good out of the box setup walk-through, reliable, can be placed vertically
Cons Tacky LED icons up front.
Recommended it? Yes

Some background on this story. I bought my first wireless router in 2002, it was a Linksys 802.11b wireless router with 4 port switch, around $69.00 with a $10.00 rebate.

This router out of the box inherently developed so many problems, and I even kept the firmware upgraded all the time... Read full review »

How quickly a good company can turn bad.

Pros Cheap. Easy to use. Fine for wire lan.
Cons Loses wireless connections at random, terrible company support, pathetic phone support.
Recommended it? No

Netgear has for a long time been a big name in home networking. Well, I now have another name for netgear - poo.

The netgear WGR614 was my first wireless router. A wireless router allows you to have all the benefits of an Ethernet network - printer, broadband and folder sharing - but... Read full review »

Its disposable: like a scratch and sniff lotto card

Pros Good performance and feature set
Cons Unreliable, terrible tech support
Recommended it? No

Buying one of these units is like playing the lottery. If it works, you've won the lotto (great features and performance for the money). But otherwise, you're stuck with a real stinker.

I've now installed three WGR614v3 and one WGR614v4 routers. The first (a WGR614v3) worked perfectly --... Read full review »

Cons Your settings are not saved when you update the flash. Does not make coffee.

I'm sure you've all read it before... "I never used to write reviews for products but I just had to share my opinion about this one." Well, that's what happened to me with this product.

I have cable Internet, video editing equipment, and CD and DVD burners. 'Nuff said: I'm always on the... Read full review »

Cons None

Despite a negative first experience(nothing to do with netgear: a rep of TIGERDIRECT recommended a "reconfiguered" netgear 614 that turned out to be a dud. Five weeks later I have yet to see a refund from TIGERDIRECT, and it looks like the shipping cost both ways will fall on me, too...) I went on... Read full review »

Pros Excellent range, reliable, easy to use, affordable.
Cons Plastic case, POE compatibility, early production issues.

As a network contractor who often does residential wireless setups I can't recommend this router too highly.

Often contractor-installed equipment is a trade-off between features that contractors like and those that end users (especially hands-on end users) like. This tends to explain the... Read full review »
