Pros Entertaining animated movie.
Cons Could be too scary for some children.
Recommended it? Yes

Many neighborhoods have at least one creepy looking house that scares children as well as a grumpy neighbor or two. Sometimes children make up stories about those houses or neighbors. The animated movie Monster House showed how three children dealt with a scary house.

Children knew to... Read full review »

Pros Concept, animation, voices, first act, sound, willingness to go "dark"
Cons Story, pacing, "love story," third act, tendency to go "too dark,"...

Old man Nebbercracker. The name alone conjures up images of childhood, playing after school, roaming through the culs-de-sacs in the neighborhood with friends. Didn't we all have that one (if you were lucky it was only one) mean neighbor you didn't ever want to run across? Oh, the horror of... Read full review »

Pros impressive animation
Cons too dark, not funny enough, really not appropriate for its intended audience
Recommended it? No

The 2006 release Monster House is a 3D formatted animated feature from Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg that gives us a glimpse into the life of a young boy (D.J.). When D.J. starts to suspect that something is very wrong with the house next door, he starts doing an investigation of his own,... Read full review »

Pros The animation of the house.
Cons Everything else
Recommended it? No

Every neighborhood has one – the house that everyone fears. It is slightly run down and the owner is a weirdo that drives everyone away from the property.

In this particular neighborhood, that house is across the street from DJ (voice of Mitchel Musso) and is owned by Nebbercracker (Steve... Read full review »

Pros great cast of voice talents; motion-capture technology; wonderfully believable animated...
Cons not suitable for the younger ones, only for children aged around 10 and up
Recommended it? Yes

I enjoy watching animated movies but can't watch any horror movies (nightmare-prone, alas, I blame it on my extraordinarily vivid imagination), so Monster House seemed like a good compromise. Chances are that a horror movie aimed at children won't be scary enough to induce nightmares in an adult... Read full review »

Pros Unique Plot
Cons Not all that scary

This movie is a great movie for the family, although it may really scare some younger kids. In this movie three kids are on a mission to discover why the house across the street seems to be alive. They discover why it is alive, but can they stop it from being so evil. Read full review »

Pros Out of this world animation, a fun movie that is worth watching over again.
Cons Script is at times unrealistic, dry humor.
Recommended it? Yes

I'll be honest; I enjoy watching animated movies when I become getting tired of horror movies. I know when I feel depressed, I watch kid movies to hopefully make me happy again. Animated movies somehow make me feel like a kid again and Monster House is another movie that points that out. Have you... Read full review »

Pros Great animation, music, voice acting, good plot, a fair bit of humour
Cons None for the target audience

Monster House was certainly not my first choice to go and watch but, under some peer pressure, I gave in to a certain curiosity about the movie. After all, computer-animated children's horror movies must be a very small sub-genre, and there was an impressive list of star names associated with it,... Read full review »

It has been a long time since I have written a review here at Epinions but I have been wanting to come back. Tonight we went to see Monster House and I thought writing a review on that would get me going again.

Monster House Widescreen DVD

MONSTER HOUSE is a feat of blockbusting filmmaking--a visually stunning witty tale that is sure to stimulate children and their parents. The film focuses on an anthropomorphic mansion a haunted house with human characteristics that actively frightens neighborhood folks as it attempts to reign over its inhabitants. One day a trio of intrepid youngsters sick of being terrorized decide to fight back. They are cutely pubescent DJ Mitchel Musso; his fumbling chubby friend Chowder Sam Lerner; and smart-as-a-whip tomboy Jenny Spencer Locke who immediately enchants the awkward boys. The local police are no help so DJ Chowder and Jenny are left to their own clever devices which result in a series of rollicking hilarious and sometimes scary adventures. A cast of colorful personalities surrounds the central characters and they are voiced by luminaries who include Catherine O'Hara Kevin James Maggie Gyllenhaal Kathleen Turner Steve Buscemi and the brilliant Fred Willard. And teen hipsters will delight in hearing the droll voice of Jon Heder the title character of cult hit NAPOLEON DYNAMITE as a deadbeat pizza maker nicknamed "Skull." First-time director Gil Kenan proves spirited and highly adept at mastering such a high-tech production and followers of animation will want to pay attention to the use of new digital techniques that stray away from straightforward computer drawing. MONSTER HOUSE is executive produced by Robert Zemeckis who helmed the innovative and sophisticated animated feature WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? in 1988. He once again proves that family fare need not be alienating to older viewers but can appeal to on every level from childhood and upward.
