Optical is the way to go

Pros Always moves accurately and smoothly; never needs cleaning
Cons Expensive
Recommended it? Yes

Microsoft's Intellimouse Optical is a great mouse that makes conventional ones obsolete.

The technology behind this mouse is great. Instead of using a ball and rollers like most mice, the Intellimouse Optical uses a lense to "see" the surface it is resting on to sense movement. It works... Read full review »

Just one of the few good Microsoft products out there

Pros many buttons, cool red glow, NO BALL!! works on most surfaces
Cons larger than typical mice (depends on your preference)
Recommended it? Yes

This mouse is great. Not only does it do away with the mouse pad altogether, it has extra buttons for added functionality. The software included allows for complete customization of all the buttons and can make life even easier! I've programmed the thumb button to double-click, now a single click... Read full review »

Pros Good looking, comfortable, well featured, precise, solidly built and ...glowing mouse!
Cons None really worth mentioning - perhaps a bit pricey?
Recommended it? Yes

The other day (17/04/01) my faithful 3 button "Ambassador Kosh" (for anyone that's seen Babylon 5) logimouse died. I'd had that mouse for over 7 years and it was an emotional moment. It was emotional because I halfway through a important deathmatch with a bitter rival of mine. Being unable to shoot... Read full review »

Pros No mouse ball, no parts to clean, no mouse pad needed, multiple buttons.
Cons -none-
Recommended it? Yes

I bought a laptop last year, and I don't like built in pointing devices (ex: pointing stick, touch pad). I also hate having to use a mouse pad and clean my mouse, so I looked at getting an optical mouse. At the time, Microsoft was the only brand carrying them, so I picked up the IntelliMouse... This mouse may not have "BALLS" but that makes it even better.

Pros There are WAY too many pros to mention in this small of a space.
Cons It feels kind of strange at first not having the ball rolling underneath the mouse.
Recommended it? Yes

Microsoft's IntelliMouse Optical must have just came out right before my standard mouse began to malfunction. I went to the store imagining the typical replacement roller-ball style mouse as my only option. I proceeded to go to the electronics department of my local Wal-Mart Supercenter (because... Way better than my old mouse

Pros Never have to be cleaned, programable buttons
Cons a little expensive for a mouse
Recommended it? Yes

I really love this mouse. It is ten times better than my old one. It fits very nicely in the palm of your hand, and is symmetrical so if fits both righties and lefties. With the new optical laser instead of the traditional ball, i don't even need a mouse pad to use it. It never skips, jams, or gets... Read full review »

Pros No moving parts, sleek, comfortable, efficient
Cons a little bit expensive
Recommended it? Yes

I was tired of cleaning mice until they wore out, which never seemed very long. And they progressively get worse. The frustration factor goes way up.

While this mouse has acted the least bit flaky a couple of times, it is far better than your average mouse. Pretty soon, you'll see every... Read full review »

I now hate all non-optical mice!

Pros Works on any surface, more accurate, 2 extra buttons.
Cons n/a.
Recommended it? Yes

I had a normal intellimouse. It was old so I got the optical. I was doubtful at first but I immediatly fell in love with it. I plugged it into my PS/2 mouse port. (Why waste a USB?). I restarted my computer (I forgot that those ports aren't plug and play) and realized I had a very sweet mouse. I... Read full review »

Pros Accuracy, Price
Cons Buggy (?) install, night-light like properties
Recommended it? Yes

A couple of months ago, my well loved, well broken in, never to be parted with mouse bit the dust... Right in the middle of a game! How rude!

Well off to the store I went! I must have spent 20-30 minutes gawking at the wall wondering what on earth all these new pointing devices, were and... Read full review »

Pros Perfect Mouse, Great Software, Mac Compatablity Good
Cons Poor PS/2 Support, No Match for iMac(who cares?)
Recommended it? Yes

Of course it had to be out sourced to do it - but MS had developed near the perfect Mouse. It actually works. Thank you Bill.

Now, I'll start off with the not-so-hot side.. .the setup at first was annoying. The PS/2 Adapter didn't work so well.. it took me an hour before I got tired if it... Read full review »
