Pros Mileage, reliable, not an ugly car to look at, sound system, visibility for blind spots
Cons Brakes, feathery steering, seats and upholstery, tiny gas tank.

I originally had the old 1992 hatchback 323. When it finally rusted out after LOTS of driving and winters, I decided to look for a new car.

I bought my protege used, for a reasonable price and now I'm very happy I do have it.

It gets good mileage and isn't a bank buster to fill... Read full review »

I owned the 1999 Mazda Protege LX. I bought it used in 2000 at 26,000 miles. It was a good car for the price. It was sporty looking yet suitable for commuting and every day use. The interior was nice and the sound system surprisingly good for factory. The glove compartment was spacious, and the... Read full review »

My wife and I wanted to purchase a new car but we were unsure about which one to get. We are the anti-SUV type and we like to have a car that has good gas mileage and is foreign built by the Japanese. In our opinion, American cars are poorly built. We did some research and discovered that Consumer... Read full review »

I'm at nearly 60,000 miles and only had to get a part tightened because it was rattling and had a sensor go bad causing the check engine light to be on constantly (mechanic said it could be one of two sensors and each cost a lot to replace). Gets great gas mileage compared with the '88 Grand Am it... Read full review »

I never bought the '99 Protege. I sort of came into it through my girlfriend/now wife, who purchased it used in the winter of 2000. It had relatively low miles, and was in good condition. My wife drives it to work, and I drive my Schwinn Moab. We have also taken it on a many trips, the longest... Read full review »

Great little cars. Had mine since brand new. Regular oil changes, change the air-filter once a year and drive it. I just changed the spark plugs at 50,000 kilometers. First car I've bought I did not have to take back to the dealer for warranty. Very tight, no rattles, and very little noise inside... Read full review »

I have owned this car for 4 years now and I must say that it has far exceeded all my expectations.

I bought it in May of 1999. I was ready to retire my trusty 1987 Toyota Camry which had 200,000 plus miles on it. The 1999 Camry was out of my price range as most cars in that class were(ie... Read full review »

We bought our 1999 Mazda Protege new. It was my husband's and my first new car and our first married purchase. Overall, we have been very happy with it, but now that it is aging, we're questioning whether we should move on to a different vehicle.

I recently bought a 1999 red Mazda Protege LX. Although it is used it it handles like a dream. You have plenty of room to seat 5 people comfortably. The sound system in the Protege is great. I bought a 99 Protege ES about three years ago, to replace my old 1988 Ford Escort. I found it very reliable, responsive, with about 24 miles/gal overall. I bought a '92 Protege used in '95. I traded it in a few years ago for ... yes... another Protege! The '92 had over 140,000 miles on it and it was still purring like a kitten so I knew that another Protege would last me.

I checked out a few other cars. The Nissan Sentra was really nice... Read full review »

'99 Protege ES

Pros Refined feel. Doesn't look like a Civic. Easy to live with. Low loan rate OAC.
Cons A bit short on power. Some rattles. Low MPG. Expensive to repair bumper test damage.
Recommended it? Yes

Update: I sold my Protege after a little more than 3 years of happy ownership. I was really tired of shifting and wanted an automatic transmission to make my life easier while stuck in traffic. I miss my Protege, but also remember some of the rattles that were never "found" by the dealer's service... Read full review »

Runabout is fair play.

Pros Zippy city handling, best-in-class looks, reliability, overall value
Cons Mushy pedal feel, somewhat underpowered (hey, it's a base model)

The way I see it, the best examples of a car company's engineering can be found in its baseline models, the bottom of the bottom. Unfettered by extra performance features and luxury gewgaws, a base econobox must provide a compromise, offering a minimum of "essential" amenities and capabilities at a... Read full review »

Last August, my girlfriend and I rented a 1999 Mazda Protege SE to go to Sudbury which was 7 hours away. I immediately fell in love with it, when I saw it.
