Looks and sounds authentic to the movie
No volume control
The Bottom Line:
My 2 year old son loves it and it looks and sounds like Lightning is supposed to. Very durable but can be annoying.
We bought this Lightning McQueen car for our son this past Christmas. I can't remember if I got it at Wal-Mart or Kmart but either way, I have seen it at both stores for $14.99. He is 2 and a half years old at the time and he was a month shy of turning 2 at Christmas. He loves Lightning McQueen and he really likes this toy!
This Lightning McQueen car measures approximately 14 inches long and he is about 6 inches wide. This is a pretty big car and that's another reason our son loves it. He not only loves Lightning McQueen, he loves big cars! Lightning McQueen is a red race car and is the main character in Disney Pixar's Cars movie. This toy looks exactly like Lightning does in the movie. On the front of the car, he has brown and yellow sticker that says "Rust-eze Medicated Bumber Ointment". Rust-eze is Lightning's sponsor. His head lights are stickers and on one of them there is a number 95. On one side of his hood is a lightning bolt sticker and on the other side of his hood is another lightning bolt that lights up.
On both sides of the car, there is a lightning bolt that runs just about the whole length of the car. Starting at the front of the car, the lightning bolts are yellow at the beginning changing to orange, and fading to red. In the middle of the lightning bolts is the number 95 that is yellow at the top and fading to red at the bottom. The number 95 is also on his roof too. On the wing of the car it says "Rust-eze Bumper Ointment" and on the back it says the same thing. Below that on the bumper itself, is a yellow sticker that says "Medicated Bumper Ointment" again in red script like lettering. He also has red tail light stickers and one of those also has the number 95 on it.
Above both of the windows on the sides of the car it says Lightning McQueen in yellow script. The windows are a bluish gray color and the front windshield is his eyes. It is white with his eyes being blue. His wheels are black with red rims. They each say Lightyear around them. I was actually told that in most Disney movies such as Finding Nemo and Monster's Inc. etc. that you can see things from another Disney movie in the movie somewhere. Like in Monster's Inc. I saw a Nemo toy. I haven't seen anything in Cars and I have seen it many times. The only thing that sticks out is Lightyear on his tires. This is only an assumption but I think it is reference to Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story. I just thought I would share! Anyway, back to the car.
This car makes sounds and he has a lightning bolt that lights up. It takes 2 AA batteries that are located on the bottom of the car. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to get to them. There are 4 yellow buttons on top of the car. One of them, my son's favorite, is the button that makes Lightning say "Ka-Pow!" and "KaChow". When he says one of these phrases the lightning bolt on the side of the hood lights up. The next button that you can push makes Lightning say "I am Lightning McQueen" and then he makes engine sounds.
The other 2 buttons make car noises. On of them are 2 different engine revving noises and the other makes a noise like he is racing down the track and the other noise sounds like squealing tires. There is also a red button. It's really not a button because it actually moves. Moving that moves Lightning's eyes. He also has a great big smile!
Ever since Christmas, we have just now started to have some of the stickers peal off. None of them have actually come off but there are parts of the stickers at the ends that have come up. The phrases that he says sound authentic to the movie. He looks the part too. The sounds aren't too bad except for the 2 engine revving sounds. They sound like a car that's about to die or something. There is an on/off switch at the bottom but there is no volume control. That can drive us crazy because it is kind of loud. It isn't too bad though only because we make him keep it in his room. This toy is very durable. Having a 2 year old as the owner of this toy you could only imagine that it has been thrown or dropped. It definitely has!
It pushes easily on the carpet and of course, he would rather find a way to make it to the kitchen with it and run him on that floor before someone sees him. Obviously this car runs even better on the kitchen floor and our son will slam him into the cupboards. This toy gets thrown back into his bedroom a lot! It's not a bad toy and it is cute. It's pretty durable but can be annoying at times. I give it an average rating because of that. It doesn't do anything spectacular and maybe if it had a volume control, I would rate it a 4 out of 5 instead of only a 3! The recommended age is 3 years and older but my son has been playing with it since he was almost 2 years old.
The batteries were included but we had to change them after only a couple of weeks. The box that it was in was completely open and you could press all the buttons at the store. After we changed them we still have not had to replace the batteries since then.
