My little brother loves to play with my netbook and dad's keyboard. Even though he's 1 year old, he knows that pressing buttons makes the screen changes, so he looks at the screen while he "types". Unfortunately, real computers aren't meant for kids that young (since many keyboards have keys that can pop out).
When he saw the leaptop, he fell in love with it and now it's the only thing he comes back to. He just goes nuts pressing those keys, especially since they make sound, and so far no accidents with keys coming out (and he usually get my keys out in about 5 minutes, so it's really good that this toy has so far lasted 3 days of constant play, even after my brother picked it up, lost his grip, and dropped it...several times - he's only 13 months old).
The sounds are loud and the computer does have programs that he'll be able to use when he gets a bit older. Considering how durable it seems, I'm sure he'll still be able to use it in a year to take advantage of the remaining features.
Dad just figured out how to personalize it so my brother can hear his name when he turns the computer on and off (which he figured out very quickly). It's one of his favorite things to do apart from forcing the abc song.
