Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara
wears all day, separates and darkens lashes, does not flake
The Bottom Line:
This is one of my favorite mascaras, but it is pricey.
I have a love/hate relationship with mascara. I love the way it looks, but I hate experimenting with different brands and colors because there are a lot of bad mascaras out there. I would rather go without mascara than risk having flakes all down my face. I received a sample of Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara with a gift with purchase and have been using it occasionally for several months. I find it to be a very satisfactory mascara, but the price is high.
My tube of this mascara is a sample, so it doesn't completely resemble the retail product. The sample is simply a small, round black tube of mascara, with information printed in on it in metallic gold letters. The retail product is also a black tube of mascara featuring gold metallic lettering, but it is larger (of course!) and the shape is squared off. Lancome claims that the brush in the mascara is patented and that it will coat each lash. I do find that the brush in my sample is quite effective at coating my lashes, but it still looks like a basic, straight mascara brush to me.
The actual mascara itself is the thick, black substance you would expect it to be. It's fine on eyelashes, but anywhere else it looks a bit gross! There is no scent to this mascara.
While my sample tube of this mascara is the most basic shade, Black, this formula is also available in Deep Black, Navy, Brown, and Deep Brown.
Use and Experience
Applying this mascara is just the same as with any product of this kind. I do like to do my bottom lashes first, as coating the top lashes before the bottom always leads to smearing. One coat is sufficient to cover my lashes nicely in black mascara, which separates them and makes them look darker and more "there." I do find that this mascara clumps a tiny bit, but it is truly minimal and easily fixed with a mascara brush. I love how my eyes look after using this mascara; this is one of those products that I find actually makes my eyes "pop."
I have been very happy with how this mascara wears. I apply it in the morning and it just stays put all day. It does not flake, which I really appreciate about it; no one wants to walk around with little black flecks under their eyes. Neither does it smudge or smear. I don't have the waterproof formula, so if it gets wet, it will run, but otherwise regular, everyday activity will not disrupt this particular formula.
Because I do work out so often, I also decided to test this mascara while I performed my usual 5.5 mile walk on the treadmill. While it didn't remain perfect, as it did while I walked around doing my usual daily routine, it only smudged a bit, under one eye. Not too bad for a mascara that isn't waterproof. I suspect the damage would be much worse if I were, say, running a marathon, but I assume that mascara-wearing marathoners probably go for waterproof mascaras anyway.
Mascara is always the hardest type of makeup to remove. I use an eye makeup remover to get this off and it always takes a minute or two because it's important to be gentle and go slow, otherwise you risk pulling out lashes. This comes off fine with the use of an eye makeup remover and some patience. It doesn't take any longer than any other mascara, and it does come off completely.
Cost and Where to Buy
Lancome products are not cheap (at all); one tube of this mascara costs $24.50 at http://www.lancome.com/. I am sure the price is the same at Lancome cosmetics counters. This is a high quality product, but it is very expensive. I recommend timing your purchases for when your local Lancome counter is offering a gift with purchase. Shopping online through a points program is another option. I occasionally shop through Mypoints.com, receiving points for the purchase and sometimes extra free samples as well.
While I normally like to include ingredients lists for beauty products, I am unable to do so in this case as my Lancome Defincils High Definition Mascara sample does not have a list with it. If you are sensitive or allergic to ingredients found in makeup, I would suggest buying in brick and mortar stores, consulting with the person behind the counter, and reading labels carefully.
Lancome Defincils High Definition Mascara is one of the better mascaras I have tried, but it is also one of the most expensive. The only problems I have with it is the tiny amount of clumping I experience on application and the price. I do love the way it looks, and I'm happy with how it wears. 4 stars.
