Krups GVX2-12 Burr Grinder: An Exercise in Futility

byneila452 Mar 18, 2010

Pros High class looks. An excellent doorstop.
Cons Poor engineering design. Functions poorly at grinding coffee.
Recommended it? No

BACKGROUND

I purchased a Krups GVX2-12 burr grinder from Boca Java, a custom coffee roaster in Florida that provides a coffee delivery service -- a very good company, by the way. Boca Java was converting their rewards system to cash rebates for those of us who had saved up a fair number of... Read full review »

jams up too much

Pros Durable
Cons Loud, Jams
Recommended it? No

This grinder grinds the beans really evenly, and it's held up well (had it for 4 years).  However every time I use it I have to shake it several times per cycle because it will jam up and stop. Read full review »

Grinding your way to contentment

Pros Good for the money. Takes up precious little counterspace. Elegant design aesthetic.
Cons Printing on item could be clearer. Receptacle container needs improvement of operation.
Recommended it? Yes

Like many Americans, I love my coffee in the morning. The feeling of caffeine running through my veins to wake me up and get me moving for the day is just what I need.

Yet I am no coffee snob. I cannot taste the delicate, distinct nuances between a Peaberry and a Kopi Luwak coffee bean... Read full review »

Should You Use The Krups Burr Grinder on Your Precious Coffee Beans?

bydavidmanning Jan 3, 2009
36 Helpfuls 37 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros inexpensive, replaceable, fine control settings, reasonably quiet
Cons creates more coffee dust than I'd like
Recommended it? Yes

Short answer: a qualified Yes. Qualified, because if you have more money to spend on your coffee, there are much better options, but definitely, spend the money for a burr grinder, not a blade grinder.

But this is Epinions, and a longer answer lets me explain, so away we go!

Do it... Read full review »

The Worst

byeas21 Oct 13, 2008

Pros easy to clean
Cons Basically the entire machine.
Recommended it? No

I got this machine because of the name, the price and reputation of the brand. However, I soon discovered that buying this machine was a major mistake. Fromthe very beginning, the grind was very uneven, beans would not feed into the burrs, the selector dials constantly stuck and that there really... Read full review »

Good for what it is - a cheap grinder that grinds well

byrandomroyalty Jul 23, 2008
11 Helpfuls 12 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Consistent grind, quiet
Cons Clogs easily with oily beans, static
Recommended it? Yes

When I bought my http://www.epinions.com/content_422888115844 I realized that my old Mr. Coffee blade grinder was not going to be up to snuff in producing a consistent grind fine enough for this machine.

While many coffee purist sites say that you should spend at least as much on your... Read full review »

Decent but Problematic

19 Helpfuls 20 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Styling, German engineering looks, cup and grind selector knobs
Cons clogs or jam consistently, uneven grind. Quality control issues
Recommended it? No

I have owned a few grinders in the past, (Braun KSM2 blade & Cuisinart DBM-8 burr) and I had high hopes for this model. Being the Krups brand with German engineering, I purchased this model from Macys November 2007 after donating my Cuisinart to my workplace. I used the Braun for a long time until... Not great with oily beans and makes a mess

byjoelfire Mar 1, 2008
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros The result is good
Cons Slow, messy, has a hard time with oily beans
Recommended it? No

If you like oily dark roasted beans like Peets, you need to constantly shake while grinding to get the burrs to "catch." Also, as another reviewer said, it makes a mess due to all the static. Those two things aside, it grinds well, but after using it for a few months I've decided it's not worth the... Read full review »

Pros Looks nice.
Cons Breaks easily, messy to use with the static.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this product on Friday from Macys. Used it twice and it broke. I brought it back and got another one. That one broke after one use. I am using Starbucks beans which I know are oilier but give me a break. It should not have broken this easily. I have had cheaper Mr. Coffee burr grinders... Read full review »

Works but slow and static city

bymike_ottawa Jan 23, 2007
7 Helpfuls 8 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good for home use. Good consistent grinding.
Cons A little too slow and too much static
Recommended it? Yes

I wanted a grinder that had good volume. This one does, but it is very slow. I wanted something for doing 12 pots a day but I would be grinding all the time. I also can't imagine how the coffee grinds would be scattered all over; the grinder generates a wicked amount of static and the beans stick... Read full review »
