Drop and Giggle and Chase After Colorful Rolling Balls

Pros balls store inside, cause and effect of what goes in must come out, somewhat entertaining
Cons wasn't a favorite toy for long
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A decent toy for a crawling/beginning to walk infant.
I received the Bright Starts Drop & Giggle toy before my son was born. It's gotten some use over the past 2 years but not nearly as much as I thought it would.

THE BASICS
The Bright Starts Drop & Giggle is a hollowed-out, giraffe-shaped infant basketball-like toy. The clear-bodied light-green giraffe sits with its arms pointed up and out and its legs spread and serves as tubing for a child to drop balls through. The Drop & Giggle stands about a foot high, comes with three lightweight balls (purple, yellow, and red), and has musical effects when the balls are dropped inside the head or arms. The balls store inside the giraffe when not in use. There is an on/off switch for the sounds (requires 2 AA batteries, which are included). The Drop & Giggle is geared for children ages 6 months and up and sells for about $15.

AGE RECOMMENDATION
I tried letting my son play with this toy when he first began sitting upright at around six months old. He didn't have much interest in it then. Honestly, there weren't that many toys he played with then. He was much more interested in trying to move with his Jumperoo or Exersaucer. When he was around 12-15 months, this toy got the most use. He and his 4 year old sister would take turns dropping the balls inside the giraffe and chasing after them as they rolled away. My daughter loved that she had a game to play with "the baby" and "the baby" loved interacting with his big sister. Since then, the giraffe has waned in its appeal. Currently (my son is 22 months old), it's at the bottom of the toy box though I have found the balls roaming the living room.

SILLY SOUNDS
Though the Drop & Giggle supposedly makes 12 different silly sounds, they all kind of sound the same and I think I've only heard 3 different ones. The sounds are supposed to teach your child cause and effect but I found that my son was more interested in seeing where the balls rolled and didn't care whether or not the sound was turned on.

WHAT GOES IN MUST COME OUT
The other fascination my son had was to stick everything inside the giraffe to see what would happen. So we've had Smurfs, Weebles, and small musical instruments go down the giraffe chute. Fortunately, nothing ever got stuck inside. The balls roll out pretty quick so you need to make sure there's nothing, like a sofa, nearby that they can roll under before you corral them back. Often, I would sit on the floor with the kids with my legs stretched so that the balls couldn't roll past me.

The giraffe itself looks like a bong. No, seriously. Everyone who's seen it (mostly males aged 20-35) in my home has commented on that fact. But, rest assured, the children simply play baby hoops with this toy.

CLEAN IT UP
The neat thing about this toy, from a parental point of view, is that the balls store inside. The giraffe twists at its waist. This locks the leg holes off so that the balls stay inside the body of the toy and can't pass out the bottom. And when Mommy says it's time to clean up, a simple twist of the giraffe sends a powerful message.

OVERALL
While this certainly wasn't a must-have toy for my son, it did get some playtime when he was around one.
