P3 Coppermine 800 MhZ /w RDRAM

Pros Speed
Cons The wait
Recommended it? Yes

Well, the P3 coppermine is finally out. I certainly am not pleased that Intel delayed the introduction of the coppermine for so long. I have been waiting for the P3 coppermine since early October. And when it actually did come out, there was such a shortage of the 733's such that regular customers... Read full review »

Can't we all just get along?

Pros Plenty fast, even if not the fastest
Cons A little more expensive than a comparable Athlon
Recommended it? Yes

It seems like the holy wars in computer circles are growing ever larger and more variant. The longest crusade, of course, and the most antagonistic, is Apple vs. everyone else. Lately, though, the PC infighting has developed into antipathy almost as virulent as that directed at them by the Mac... Read full review »

Pentium IIIs are great..... BUT

byfunkdaddysmack Apr 29, 2000

Pros Good performance, Intel's big name behind it
Cons More expensive than Athlon's with no or less performance advantage
Recommended it? Yes

Yes, it's true, Pentium IIIs are great processors. I have one in my machine right now, and it screams, but I can't help but be disapointed. Why? Everyone has heard of the AMD Athlons by now, and my experiences with them were very good. In fact, I like them a lot, better than Pentium IIIs.

Pros Fast, Modern, and Overclocks well
Cons Still costs more than Athlon

Udate 8/6/2001: The Tualatin Pentium III now has the official name Pentium III - M(obile). In addition to having 512KB of L2 Cache and a speed of 1.13 GHz, the Pentium III - M includes an improved SpeedStep power management scheme as well as hardware cache prefetch algorithms that should boost... Pentium III - 733MHz (Coppermine)

byMark_Ustby Aug 8, 2000
9 Helpfuls 10 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Fast, inexpensive, best price/performance ratio
Cons Not the fastest chip around (if it really matters that much)
Recommended it? Yes

The Intel Pentium III processor, though very similar in architecture to the Pentium II and the older and lesser known Pentium Pro, has proven that it can compete very well with products from AMD, some of which are based on an architecture that is technologically superior to the Pentium III, and the... P3's are full of overclocking goodness

Pros Easily Overclockable + Superior Performance
Cons Huh? Cons with a Coppermine?
Recommended it? Yes

I just bought a p3-550e about a week ago and its been awesome so far. I've got it on a ABIT BE-6 2 motherboard with 256 megs of mushkin pc133 ram. With this lineup I got my FSB up to around ~150 mhz and the p3-550e was performing at the speed of a p3-733!!!!!!(with minimal cooling) The P3... Read full review »

I'll Take III (Three)

Pros Performance, no problems
Cons Ever changing technology
Recommended it? Yes

The Intel Pentium III impresses me. I was a former owner of an Intel 80386, an Intel 80486 processor, and an AMD K6 chip, this one I like the best. Obviously it is faster, but that is a given, it also though has been the only chip I've had so far that can handle anything I throw at it.

Wonderful technology, but it's AMD's ball

Pros Inexpensive, faster and runs cooler than the Athlon and Pentium 4 architecture
Cons Outdated and soon won't be supported
Recommended it? No

Not really not that old, but it has become outdated.

The architecture, though, is still pretty impressive. If you paired off a P3 and P4 of equal MHz, the P3 would be running cooler and faster. As for AMD, they would have gone under for sure if Intel hadn't discontinued the P3. AMD has... Read full review »

The PIII's That Could . . . Torture Testing

bylilviv Feb 15, 2001
8 Helpfuls 9 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Durable, Fast, Great Performing, Very Overclockable, etc.
Cons More Expensive Than Competing AMD Processors . . .
Recommended it? Yes

I have had two PIII machines in the recent past, one of which I didn't sell and kept. The PIII 700E was running with just a Golden Orb on it and was easily overclockable to 896 MHz.

My new PIII 800E is even better . . . and, it is ALWAYS UNDER 100% load as I'm torture testing it, now . ... Read full review »

Intel 866 Mhz P3 Rocks - but only with right equipment

bymatwood Nov 6, 2000

Pros FAST, but requires proper motherboard
Cons Still pricey compared to AMD
Recommended it? Yes

I have been building computers for over 20 years now, and have used AMD, Cyrix, and Intel. Lately, Cyrix seems to have dropped the ball, so the only competition is between AMD and Intel.

I have multiple systems with multiple CPU's, all from Intel. When I used to sell computers, the... Read full review »
