The Cheap Cousin

byphnem Jan 23, 2000

Pros Cheap, Affordable
Cons No Muscle
Recommended it? No

The Intel Celeron started out as Intel's attempt to compete in the cheap PC market. What they did was to create a Pentium II without L2 Cache. When the market tests came back, users hated it. The performace was horrid compared to AMD and Cyrix chips. Intel's only choice was to add L2 cache to the... Read full review »

Cheap, Fast and Easy

Pros cheap, fast, easy to install
Cons ????
Recommended it? Yes

Ever since the Celeron 300a came out, the Celeron has established itself as the number choice of processor for price/performance pc's. Even now with faster chips like the 466 and 500 processors, the Celeron retains it's good price/performance status.

First of all, the Celeron is the most... Read full review »

Fear from Intel

byDroppedD Jan 10, 2000
2 Helpfuls 3 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros fast when overclocked, OCs well, cheap
Cons slower when not overclocked
Recommended it? Yes

This processor was intended as a blatant attempt to force AMD out of the low-end of the PC processor market. The result was, at first, a horrible, disgusting piece of cr@p with no practical uses. (Techies only: No onboard cache.)
After a few months of being laughed at by the entire PC Geek... Read full review »

Check out the 300a!

Pros 300A Celeron is appx. power of a 266 PII, cheap, reliable.
Cons Overclocking doesn't always work.
Recommended it? Yes

Okay everyone, there has been a lot of talk about the Celeron 300A processor, how it has a cache, and how it's easily overclockable. Not to mention how easy it is to install, and how cheap it is to find.

What first made me look at the 300A was it's option to overclock to 450mhz, and at a... Read full review »

Celeron 300A

Pros Easily overclockable, cheap, fast, available
Cons very few
Recommended it? Yes

I bought a 300A in December of 98, and to this day I have this processor. It easily overclocked to 464, and I had no heat problems or stability problems of any sort. When I bought it, it cost me about 90 dollars, and the comparable Pentium II 450 was an outrageous 500-600 dollars, depending on... Read full review »

Celeron: Big blue parking space (really close to the mall).

Cons Factory disabled second (my opinion),

Celeron: The "Differently Abled" Processor.

The Intel Celeron is arguably the most shrewd (some would say "evil") example of "creative marketing" ever known to man. I have been an IT Professional for almost seven years and have never seen the kind of blind support for a bargain product as... Read full review »

Don't be fooled with Celeron!

Pros Runs most programs and games well.
Cons Not upgradeable, old technology.
Recommended it? No

So you think Celeron is a great deal. Well to some it may seem to be if one does not know about processors. Having had 15 years experience in the computer field I have learned some of the differences some of you may not be aware of. The first thing I would mention is clock speed. This determines... P3 Unimpressive.

Pros A reasonably fast CPU
Cons Doesn't live up to Intel's hype
Recommended it? No

After acquiring a Pentium 3 this week I find myself unenthusiastic. It is of course faster than my AMD K6-2. However, I have had the opportunity to use an AMD Athlon, and I have become spoiled. I was able to notice a difference in speed between my P3 500 and the Athlon 550 that I have used that is... Read full review »

Intel vs AMD - Best Bang for the Buck!

Pros not a thing
Cons more expensive than the more superior AMD Duron. Poor performance.

AMD Duron and Athalon

AMD has always been lurking in the background of the processor market. It was not until recently that they have come full force into the PC market. Needless to say, they are here to stay!

I have been buying AMD products since the early 300MHz K6 processor... Read full review »

Celeron vs K7 ??

Pros it's cheap.
Cons for the price, you might as well get an AMD.
Recommended it? No

The Intel Celeron processor has been praised by overclockers, gamers with very little money, and companys that like to sell over-priced computers. The newest Celerons still run at a 66MHz bus. As PriceWatch.Com will tell you, the only available celerons are 533MHz and below, despite the fact that... Read full review »
