Review of the good ol' Celeron 300A

byDJ1s Nov 27, 2000

Pros Cheap, fast (w/ overclocking)
Cons Small cache, hard on some business intensive software
Recommended it? Yes

To battle AMD and regain the low-end computer market Intel introduced their new Celeron line of processors. These original Celeron?s came in speeds of 266 and 300.

The introduction of the Celeron brought little praise as these cacheless Celeron?s performed horribly in most business... Read full review »

The best MHz for the buck.

Pros Great Performance for the Price
Cons No Level 2 Cache
Recommended it? Yes

A year ago when I was building a new PC system for myself I was doing some careful shopping for parts that I was going to put into this system. The most difficult decision was the processor. I was lucky because I was able to buy through a wholesaler. They had a very nice selection of parts at good... Read full review »

Cons Lack of upgradeability in "brand name" PCs

I am very impressed with the Celeron processor. For a fraction of the cost of the Pentium 3 line, a Celeron processor delivers the power and reliability that made intel famous. The core of the processor is actually the same as the core of the Pentium 3 with two exceptions; it has smaller cache... Read full review »

Dual Celeron Power!

Pros Cheap, Good for General Use, Overclockable
Cons Not the Fastest
Recommended it? Yes

When I was building my computer for college, I had to decide on a few factors on which to customize my computer to. First, with technology moving at such a fast pace, is it smart to buy the fastest most expensive processor there was? Second, what kind of things would I be doing mainly with my... Why not to buy a celeron

Pros cheap
Cons slow, 1/2 the cache of a true pentium
Recommended it? No

celeron chips are cheap but you do get what you pay for. Celeron is the entry level chip for intel made for cheaper home computers. You will never find celeron chips in business computer they are far to slow! Lets compare P3 chips verses celeron chips that are written with P3 code. Pentium3 have... Read full review »

Intel's 2nd

Pros Intel
Cons Not top of the line
Recommended it? Yes

After biting our nails waiting for Intel to come out with an answer to AMD?s Athon and new entries into the low cost market such as Cyrix?s Joshua. The Pentium III is obviously too high-end to compete in this segment, and the original Celeron lacks the features to be considered a competitor.

As Good as the Rest

Pros cheap, fast
Cons lack of cache
Recommended it? Yes

I was skeptical at first about how good it would perform. I bought one however. I bought a 466mhz Celeron for only $100. I thought that because of the 128k cache that it wouldn't perform very well. I was wrong. Now, I use a celeron in my own PC that I built. I love it and I recommend it to anyone... Read full review »

Can it hold it's own?

Pros cheap, runs okay
Cons can be a bit slower than a P3, but you shouldn't notice
Recommended it? Yes

I'm the proud (I think) owner of a computer with an Intel Celeron processor inside. While the celeron is Intel's cheapest chip, it performs quite well. Games on a celeron are okay, but you need a awesome graphics card to relieve the processor a bit.

You can tell by running benchmarks that... Read full review »

Pros Price, Compatibility
Cons Almost a PIII
Recommended it? Yes

I was a long time AMD fan but in testing the Celeron against a K6-2 of

the same MHZ in real world testing,(Run Winamp with Geiss 4.23 plugin)and

you will see the true speed of Intel. The FPU is vastly superior. Now we

put a Celeron 500 up against a K6-3 and the margin... Read full review »

Pros Cheaper
Cons Less onboard Cache
Recommended it? Yes

What makes the pentium II so special is the super fast onboard cache. For you non computer geeks this is a super fast place that your computer can store any kind of data. This becomes very useful when word processing and typing up documents in programs like microsoft word. The computer uses this... Read full review »
