Fun, wet racer

Pros Graphics, fun
Cons no 4 player
Recommended it? Yes

To be honest, there is one reason, and one reason only, that I own this game. I got it in a 5 for a #1 sale bin not too long ago along with Dreamcast Re-Volt and WWF Attitude as well as SNES Multitap and scart leads.

I'm not a particular fan of racing games, nor speedboats. I rarely ever... Read full review »

Hydro Thunder for the Dreamcast is the kind of game that reminds me of the early days of video gaming. Before you start thinking of rotten graphics and shallow gameplay and wondering what the heck I'm talking about, let me explain.

Back when the Atari 2600 was king, the best games for... Read full review »

Intro:

I've been meaning to buy Hydro Thunder (HT) since the Dreamcast launched in 1999. I've played it numerous times in the arcades, and found it to be a pretty fun game. But I wasn't going to plunk down $50 dollars for a game that would last me a week. HT was born and raised in the... Read full review »

Pros It's fast and wild!
Cons Not enough options.

With so many titles to choose from during the Dreamcast launch, I surprised myself by picking this one up along with Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur. It's not that I thought it would be bad, but I could have gotten more intriguing games like Power Stone or NFL 2K. Today, I'm glad I ended up with... Read full review »

sxejustin thought of the title for this review

Arcade racers have never really been my game of choice. As Austin Powers would say "they're not my bag, baby". They?re usually no depth games that I blaze through in a matter of days, if not hours. I was a little apprehensive about buying... Read full review »

Hydro Thunder can't stay afloat long.

bySwitchsonic Apr 8, 2001

Pros Fun tracks (the first time), fast, nice graphics in single player.
Cons Ugly and slow in two player mode, no replay value, no added features.
Recommended it? No

I think we can declare the arcade officially dead. Dead, buried, and honestly, I'm sure a lot of us are glad to see it gone. Nowadays we need more then the standard one-mode races, without options or extra features. We've come to love variety, and in the end, that's what Hydro Thunder lacks. Even... Read full review »

Pros Just like having the arcade in your home
Cons despite hidden shortcuts, very limited replay value

In the days of SNES and Sega Genesis, the gap between home consoles and arcade machines was vast enough to justify playing games like Mortal Kombat 2 in the arcade even if you owned the home version -- it was an entirely different experience. Even with the greater capabilities of the PSX and N64,... Read full review »

Hydro Thunder is awesome. I have never seen a cooler racing game ever, well except for F-Zero I haven?t.

The Dreamcast?s analog controller seems to fit perfectly with this game. The control is neither to tight or too loose, I think it is pretty much perfect. Whenever you go around a... Read full review »

A water-based racer, this game is high on detail and graphics, low on gameplay and speed. This racing genre is new due to technological advances in console systems which allow game desgners to imitate the random movements of water.

In my opinion, RACING GAME OF THE YEAR! I do only have experience with the arcade version and the PlayStation version of this game, but recommend it for all systems. Hydro Thunder is a good, but not incredible arcade to Dreamcast port. Think SF Rush mixed with Wave Race64. While the actual racing is quite enjoyable, the lack of extras and high difficulty hurt the game.

Hydro Thunder

You've never seen anything like it! Hydro Thunder is a high-speed, 3D super boat racer that uses Newtonian physics to emulate the feel of real thunder boat racing. Players actually feel the boats respond to waves, wild terrain and roadblocks with a realism unmatched in any other game. Hydro Thunder includes ten vividly rendered tracks and 9 unique boats. Each track contains short-cuts, ramps and turbo-boost icons that give players a burst of speed and invulnerability. The incredible graphics are not to be believed and a split-screen mode allows head-to-head competitive play. Afraid of the water? Get over it. Release is currently scheduled for 09/09/1999 (subject to change).

Hydro Thunder

As the first boat racing game on the Dreamcast, Hydro Thunder takes full advantage of the advanced processing power of this 128-bit machine. You'll steer one of 13 different boats through 14 fast and furious racing environments. As with the arcade version, you'll race against the clock and numerous other boats in a quest to reach the finish line first. The spectacular graphics and detailed race environments make this a most atypical racing game. In fact, there are times when you might find it difficult to concentrate on the racing because there is so much peripheral eye candy. We were most impressed by the New York Disaster, Far East, and Arctic Circle racing areas. Many of the best elements of Hydro Thunder are likely to be completely bypassed by casual gamers, since there are numerous hidden tracks, boats, and other elements to be uncovered in this game. However, persistent racers will be well-rewarded, since some of the best tracks can only be unlocked after winning several races. --Brett Atwood Pros: Detailed race environments Numerous hidden game elements Cons: Difficulty level will challenge beginning gamers
