Hot Rod

Amateur suburban stunt man Rod Kimble (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Andy Samberg) believes he's destined to follow in the footsteps of his late father, who made test runs of Evel Knievel's stunts before the better-known daredevil repeated them and took all the glory. Kimble risks life and limb strictly for fun and the entertainment of the neighborhood kids, but when his macho stepfather, Frank (DEADWOOD's Ian McShane)--who repeatedly beats and belittles Rod in basement sparring matches--develops a life-threatening heart ailment, Rod attempts the biggest jump of his career to raise the $50,000 necessary to get Frank a heart transplant so that he can have one last chance to fight Frank and prove his manhood.

HOT ROD establishes its mission statement early on when Rod pedals his moped past a Salvation Army thrift store in his sloppily hand-decorated costume. Seemingly inspired by NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, THE KARATE KID, and the HAPPY DAYS episode in which the Fonz attempts to jump his motorcycle over 14 garb...

Pros Samberg is hilarious
Cons Probably too dumb for a lot of people
Recommended it? Yes

This movie is both a tribute to goofy 80's slapstick movies, with heavy influence from the late Evil Kinevil. Without having any major star power, this movie... Read full review »

Funny... in an extremely stupid way

Pros Funny acting, gloriously stupid premise, awesome stunts and slapstick
Cons Cursing, crude jokes, and depending on who you are, everything in the pro category
Recommended it? Yes

Hot Rod is a movie that can be best described as Napoleon Dynamite with cursing. Both movies have very loose plots, or in Napoleon's case no plot at all, and focus mainly on slap stick humor and extremely dumb characters. In other words if you aren't a fan of Napoleon or Chris Farley and Adam... Read full review »

Pros The Footloose homage was kind of funny.
Cons The movie was unfunny, painful, boring, and the "jokes" were beat to death.
Recommended it? No

I can live a full and happy life now, knowing that my place in the afterlife is assured. Yes, when I die, and go to face Saint Peter for judgment he'll check his notes and go "Oh, you've done your time in hell already. Please, come right in." - and I'll get a free pass. The name of that personal... Read full review »
