Avoid this scanner if you care about quality and reliability

Pros Looks nice from outside, otherwise I can't find any.
Cons Poor quality, not reliable (software), slow, no updates to software to fix bugs.
Recommended it? No

I've had this scanner for a few years now and have been mostly unhappy with it.
The software often cannot find the scanner until I switch it to another USB port.
The files are often being saved of a smaller (1/3) than expected size and resolution based on the DPI setting.

Pros good quality(HP!)/ easy2use/
Cons slow
Recommended it? Yes

This scanner works great if you want to convert your 35mm or slides to digital formats.
It is a little bit slow - so expect to spend some time (while watching TV for example) to feed it from time to time with the next slides (if you want to convert all your old pictures).

I am still... Read full review »

Pros Image Quality
Cons Speed
Recommended it? Yes

I'm a relatively serious hobby photographer, and I enjoy shooting slide film, and often use a local custom lab to print my work on a digital optical photographic printer. The output from this scanner provides large, high-resolution files that are perfect for digital darkroom.

Pros Ease of use. Space saver compared to flat bed scanners. True picture quality from...
Cons Doesn't take any other size negative like the old box type B&W that I also have.
Recommended it? Yes

I would recommend this product to anyone who has a large amount of 35mm photographs they wish to either scan onto CD's or to scan in to touch up with Photoshop. I am the owner of the previous version which is the HP 5100 and I bought it to scan and restore hundreds of old early 1900's B & W... Read full review »

Could use a better dynamic range, better shadow detail

Pros User friendly scanner that usually produces good results
Cons Limited dynamic range
Recommended it? Yes

I could talk about how this scanner has a limited dynamic range and poor shadow detail. But I love this scanner for several reasons despite its flaws: First, the scanner is very intuitive and user friendly. I have tried other scanners that are aimed for the professional market, and they are usually... Read full review »

Pros Fast; Scans Negatives, Slides, and Pictures; Full Color; Great Quality
Cons Not a Flatbed Scanner.

I originally purchased the Hewlett Packard Photosmart Photo scanner from Best Buys around January 1998. The scanner scans at higher quality than any other scanner available (still!). The software it uses to scan images is great and simple; it is the fastest way to scan a negative / slide / picture... Read full review »

Cons low quality print scans (only up to 300dpi) and high priced compared to other flat bed...
Recommended it? No

I recently purchased this scanner when my old Kodak PhotoDoc scanner was no longer compatible with my new PC running Windows 98. Plus I was looking for the ability to scan 35mm slides.

I must say I'm very disappointed in the quality of the print scans of the HP PhotoSmart S20 compared to... Read full review »

The PhotoSmart S20 is a well built film and photo scanner offering maximum versatility and moderate price, and at a somewhat slow performance. This is a recommended item for professionals investing in a film scanner for the first time.

Photosmart Scanner by HP is a sure winner! Being an Epson fan, I was reluctant to buy the HP scanner. The only reason I bought it was because an Epson scanner was not available at my local store. Boy, am I glad I discovered the Photosmart. I am a photography enthusiast, and will not compromise the... Read full review »
