Guns And Coffee.

Pros Mann's direction, De Niro and Pacino's performances.
Cons Veers a ittle too close to soap opera territory at times.

Michael Mann's Heat is one movie that brings to mind individual sequences every time I think about it. That doesn't mean it doesn't work as a cohesive story. But certain scenes stick in the mind.

One particular scene has Al Pacino as LAPD cop Vincent Hanna  stopping bank robbery... Read full review »

Heat: An Action Film That Shows Cops and Bad Guys

Pros Fast Paced, Al Pacino, Deniro, Cat and Mouse, Intense
Cons John Voight's acting

I truly love the movie Heat. Yes, it has been over fifteen years since its release, but Michael Mann should be proud of his work. This one is still a cult classic, and all you have to say is "Waingro" or "Slick," and others will "get it." That says something about legacy. There are a lot of movies... Read full review »

Los Angeles Police Lt. Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and Neil Macauley (Robert de Niro) are a lot like each other.  Both are smart, both are tough, both are absolutely loyal to the members of their team -- and both make one crucial mistake in the course of this movie.  For Hanna, the mistake... Don't let the beginning throw you off, Heat is packed with suspense and left me on the edge of my seat the whole time. This is saying a lot because I don't like action films, but Al Pacino and Robert De Niro were great together and the story line was very gripping. In the middle of the movie, Al... It's a shame "Heat" is not the fantastic crime movie you'd expect it to be. It has so much potential to be an epic and exciting film, especially considering the all-star cast, the director and the premise. But the film is a bit too epic for its own good as it makes the common mistake of trying to... Read full review »

Obsessed, workaholic LA detective Al Pacino trails highly efficient, tight-knit robbers led by smart, detailed Robert De Niro, whose motto is; Never get involved in anything you can't walk away from in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat coming. Cons Would like to have seen a little more of Waingro's side job throughout..

Michael Mann already had a lot of critical acclaim from the 80's hit series "Miami Vice" and more recentley the movies "The Insider" and "Collateral". In the middle of it, the core, is the strongest of them all...HEAT.

Heat is a very cool flick, precisely because it knows what it's doing. This is not a stupid actioner, with silly over-the-top characters shooting oversized guns between rabbit romps in the woods (with illiterate vixens dressed in daisy-duke shorts). It's an action-packed drama about cops and... Read full review »

That I put off seeing director and writer Michael Mann's stylized epic 1995 cops 'n robbers film Heat for nine years is a crime for which I have no excuse. After reading this review, you'll have no excuse at all.

If you know of another film as satisfyingly broad as Michael Mann's Heat, then please tell me now because since seeing it in the cinema I haven't found anything to touch it.

Heat [VHS]

Having developed his skill as a master of contemporary crime drama, writer-director Michael Mann displayed every aspect of that mastery in this intelligent, character-driven thriller from 1995, which also marked the first onscreen pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The two great actors had played father and son in the separate time periods of The Godfather, Part II, but this was the first film in which the pair appeared together, and although their only scene together is brief, it's the riveting fulcrum of this high-tech cops-and-robbers scenario. De Niro plays a master thief with highly skilled partners (Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore) whose latest heist draws the attention of Pacino, playing a seasoned Los Angeles detective whose investigation reveals that cop and criminal lead similar lives. Both are so devoted to their professions that their personal lives are a disaster. Pacino's with a wife (Diane Venora) who cheats to avoid the reality of their desolate marriage; De Niro pays the price for a life with no outside connections; and Kilmer's wife (Ashley Judd) has all but given up hope that her husband will quit his criminal career. These are men obsessed, and as De Niro and Pacino know, they'll both do whatever's necessary to bring the other down. Mann's brilliant screenplay explores these personal obsessions and sacrifices with absorbing insight, and the tension mounts with some of the most riveting action sequences ever filmed--most notably a daylight siege that turns downtown Los Angeles into a virtual war zone of automatic gunfire. At nearly three hours, the film qualifies as a kind of intimate epic, certain to leave some viewers impatiently waiting for more action, but it's all part of Mann's compelling strategy. Heat is a true rarity: a crime thriller with equal measures of intense excitement and dramatic depth, giving De Niro and Pacino a prime showcase for their finely matched talents. --Jeff Shannon
