Graco My Ride 65
Price, safety ratings, convenience features
Bulky, twisting straps, difficult installation in the beginning.
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this car seat to anyone because of the price and safety reasons.
When my toddler turned one I was faced with the decision to get him a new car seat. With so many different kinds of car seats on the market such as, Britax, Chicco, Evenflo, and The First Years, picking a new car seat turned out to be a very difficult decision for me to make. That decision took me four long months of research until I finally decided to go with the Graco My Ride 65.
The first thing in my mind while choosing a car seat was the type of car seat to get. My one year old is very tiny and not even 20 pounds, so technically he could still stay in an infant car seat with went up to 35 pounds, but that seemed very uncomfortable. During my research I found out that the AAP (American Association of Pediatrics) now recommend letting a child stay rear facing in a car seat until the age of two. That’s when all my choices of car seats got narrowed down to the Graco My Ride 65. The Graco My Ride 65 car seat is perfect for this new guideline. It can hold a child from 5 to 65 pounds which is newborn to approximately school age. It can be used as a rear facing car seat from 5 to 40 pounds and a forward facing car seat from 20 to 65 pounds. With that thought in mind I knew that the Graco My Ride 65 would be perfect for my growing toddler.
The Graco My Ride 65 car seat comes assembled already inside of the box. This is a big plus because a lot of car seats on the market make you attach different items are take extra steps before you get to install the car seat. That is really inconvenient and I was thankful when I opened the box the car seat came fully assembled.
The Graco My Ride 65 is also very stylish. It comes in a variety of colors from pinks and purples for little girls to blues and greens for little girls. There are also a large variety of neutral colors that are suitable for both genders.
There are many convenience features that the Graco My Ride 65 possesses that played a big part in my overall decision. The main convenience feature is there are two cup holders. This is perfect for my toddler because he always has to have his sippy cup and snacks or a variety of toy trucks with him during car rides. The cup holders are deep and wide enough so that things don’t fall out and he can grasp things in them with ease and everything seems to fit perfectly. Another convenience feature is the installation ease. I admit this was kind of difficult and frustrating at first. It took me a little over an hour to fully and safely install this car seat into my 4-door Chevy. The installation got easier with time and I can now take the car seat in and out with ease.
The ease of getting a toddler in and out of the car seat is another convenience feature that I do not like too much. The car seat is really high and if you have a vehicle with high seats it might be a pain getting them in and out. My car is small and my seats are fairly low so I don’t have his problem all the time only when we ride in another vehicle.
Another problem with the installation is the straps. The straps have to be adjusted according to height and which way the car seat will be facing. If the car seat is rear facing the car seat straps must be underneath the top of the child’s shoulders. If the car seat is forward facing the car seat straps must be over the top of the child’s shoulders. This gets complicated when adjusting the straps because you have to unbuckle the top straps from a metal buckle underneath a plastic lever on the back of the car seat. This causes the straps to sometimes twist and cause you to rethread the straps all over again.
Once the straps are adjusted according to the child’s height adjusting them to fit snuggly to the child’s body is really easy and literally just a push of a button. There is a flap between the bottoms of the car seat where the child’s legs hang, inside that flap is a button that will loosen up the straps according to your needs. You control this by pulling on the shoulder straps.
The buckles of the car seat are really easy to use and really hard for a toddler to figure out how to unbuckle them. The chest strap is wide and fits snuggly over the chest area and the crotch strap is the perfect length to buckle in children of all ages and sizes.
The price of the Graco My Ride 65 was a huge factor in my overall decision to purchase this car seat. I got mine on sale at Wal-Mart for 140 dollars. This was a real big steal because this car seat normally is about 180 dollars.
The price of the car seat plays a big part of the quality of the material of the car seat. The material is exceptionally soft and comfy. I love how the material seems to hug my toddler while he is riding in the car. On the other hand the material seems to be made of suede which can get pretty hot especially in the summer months. My toddler does sweat sometimes in his car seat but it’s not to the point where he is crying in discomfort. I don’t think he even notices the sweating.
The Graco My Ride 65 is really easy to clean especially with messy toddlers. The car seat cover is completely machined washable and dryable. This seat cover washes and dries extremely fast and the car seat cover is really simple and no hassle to put back on. The metal and buckle parts can be washed easily with a soapy towel and the straps can be spot cleaned. The ease of cleaning this car seat was a big factor because my toddler is always spilling juice or gummy snacks in his car seat.
Safety for the Graco My Ride 65 is exceptional. The Graco My Ride 65 is rated one of the safest car seats on the market. This car seat surpassed a lot of brands in several US crash testing and side impact testing. One of the factors that make this car seat one of the safest is the ESP, energy absorbing foam, inside the car seat padding which is used for effective impact management. Another thing I think makes this car seat safe is the overall size. It is really big and sturdy. It makes me feel as though my toddler is safest while riding in this car seat rather than others. There is also the big feature of LATCH installation. Most cars made after 2000 come equip with latches in the sides of the seats and on top which hook on the car seat in three different places. This along with the car’s seatbelts make this car seat fit securely in a vehicle without any movement. This feature makes me feel safe while my toddler is riding with me.
Because of the size and all the safety features this car seat is very bulky. It weighs about 20 pounds and is 27 inches long and 20 inches wide. This can be a pain to haul around but if you don’t need to take this car seat out daily then it’s perfect. Another thing about the size goes with the height of the car seat. Since it is really tall it is kind of hard to see out of the back window of a vehicle if the car seat is in the middle. It is also kind of difficult to see out of the back window if the car seat is rear facing also because of the height and size. If the car seat doesn’t have to be in the middle then the height won’t be a big problem.
I personally think that for my family’s needs the pros definitely outweigh the cons. I weighed out the pros and the cons of this car seat before making my decision and although there are many features that I don’t like there are more that I do. I would rather deal with twisted car seat straps, hot fabric, and an exceptionally large car seat than to deal with an unsafe car seat. Like I explained most of the cons are minor and don’t make a big difference in the quality of this car seat.
I would definitely recommend the Graco My Ride 65 to any parent or guardian mainly because of the safety and the price. If you are looking for an exceptionally safe car seat for a reasonable price then the Graco My Ride is the perfect car seat. This car seat does has pros and cons that are worth considering before ultimately choosing a car seat, but every car seat on the market has the same amount of pros and cons that are different for different families.
I am very happy with the purchase I made over a year ago. The Graco My Ride 65 has not let me down since. Although I’ve had encounters with most of the cons I described they weren’t bad enough to give up on the car seat and decided to spend money on a new one. My two years old is 30 pounds and we haven’t even had to think about buying a new one soon because of the size. I know of people who have to buy a new car seat every year because their kids outgrow their old one so quickly. That is definitely not the case with the Graco My Ride 65. This car seat should take us another year or two and is always a plus
