Crônicas Brasileiras is a Portuguese reader containing a collection of short, lively compositions that originally appeared in Brazilian newspapers, magazines, and anthologies and were written by some of Brazil's most distinguished contemporary authors. Bachianas brasileiras was among the many untranslatable forms Heitor Villa-Lobos created. In essence, they fuse the techniques and textures of J.S. Bach with music from Villa-Lobos' native Brazil. Nine such suites in total incorporate a vast diversity of instrumental and vocal combinations. This album features excerpts from five of these suites, as well as moments from some of his other more popular creations. While a survey of this type gives listeners a quick overview of the composer's output, it is put together rather choppily. Including only individual movements of some of the Bachianas brasileiras leaves a decidedly incomplete picture.
