This is a great GPS for even the most electronically challenged. I purchased this as a gift for my husband and he loves it. He is an avid hunter and this was the perfect gift for him. Pros small, lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to use
Cons accuracy, compass, limited features
Recommended it? Yes

The Garmin eTrex Handheld GPS Receiver is a great GPS for anyone who has little to no experience with GPS units and wants to become familiar with one. The eTrex is small (2 x 4.4 x 1.2 in) and weighs just over 5 oz. with the batteries. It uses 2 AA batteries, but they last for about 20 hours. It... Read full review »

An amazing basic GPS receiver

For years I'd been using an older Garmin Etrex receiver to log the collection of fungi. Unfortunately the sensitivity was such that under heavy foliage I would be unable to get a lock. With some trepidation I upgraded to the eTrex H, unsure whether or not it would cut the mustard. Well, the eTrex H... Read full review »

Pros Cheap,Good for hunting.
Cons A little simple.

This is a good entry level GPS that is great for making orienteering courses. I find it annoying that it can not follow a you trail when retracing paths. For example if you walk down a winding trail, it will guide you back in a strait line. but other than that it is good. Read full review »

Pros Great value. Some nice features. Good usability.
Cons None, at this price.

I bought mine, I would guess, about five years ago. It's still going strong and I've not been tempted to upgrade. I use it mostly for hiking, but have also used to it to measure distance on my training runs, on my bike, and while driving.

I won't go into all the features - you can read... Read full review »

I enjoy being in the outdoors a lot. Me and my dad go hunting several times during the year and many times we go to places we've never been. The Garmin eTrex has become one of our best friends. My dad really likes to see how far we can go and then wait until after dark for our return trip. This... Read full review »

Cons No mapping software

This Etrex is the simplest of recreational GPS's, but it is definitely worth its economical price. It has an adequate amount of memory for storing hundreds of waypoints. I have yet to fill it. For the most part I've used this GPS while out geocaching, and it serves to that purpose very well. It can... Read full review »

We bought this unit when we decided as a family to start moving and getting out a bit more. One focus was that it was easy enough for the kids (12&14) to read and understand. This unit did fit the bill.

One of the first steps with this is to set up where your home coordinates are. It... Read full review »

I decided to do some backwoods hiking in the wilderness of Shenandoah National Park today. This area has not been maintained since the 60's so no trail markers and in many cases no trail. I decided to bring my eTrex as a backup - MISTAKE - my GPS 'bread crumb' trail left from my hike in was... Read full review »

This is an express review. I had an etrex for a year. It was durable, got it at a great price, and was generally happy with it. The only real problems were that the battery case screw jammed sometimes and the coordinate numbers were too small to read easily. It would have been easy for the... Read full review »

The eTrex is truly a great device. The battery life and durability is great and works just great for my needs (geocaching). However, if you need something truly dependable and super-accurate, look higher up on the line such as the Vista. Otherwise, a great product and would recommend. Read full review »
