My New Front Loading Washer Was Less Than $400--and it Works Great!

Pros Inexpensive; Energy efficient; Quiet; Gets clothes clean
Cons Longer cycle times than a top loader
Recommended it? Yes

My top loading Maytag washer was only six years old, but had been giving us trouble for the last two or three years, so my husband and I were planning on fixing or replacing it (one of these days) depending on the cost. The washer became unbalanced far too easily. Often, the washer would shake so... Read full review »

Pros Budget-friendly, water and detergent-efficient, easy to use, fast spin/less drying time...
Cons You need to know a few quirks first that Frigidaire doesn't tell you.
Recommended it? Yes

Kind of long, but worth the read...

After a few months of reading up on washers and dryers, I finally purchased this model from a west Houston Lowe's and took delivery this past Saturday. (early Feb 2008) I had almost given up on front-loaders until Consumer Reports listed this as a 'Best... Read full review »

Goodbye Toploader

Pros Saves energy, inexpensive, laundry almost dry, easy to use, hand wash option,...
Cons End-of-Cycle alert to quiet, long cycle times
Recommended it? Yes

We always liked the idea of front loaders, even before they became trendy. We spent 3 years in Chicago and the front loaders at the laundry mat were our preference. I've heard a lot of rumors about these newer consumer models though, so considerable research was done before purchasing.

Pros Uses less water, electricity, & detergent. Very stylish
Cons Front load design takes some getting used to

Late one night at work I received "the call" from my wife. Our Whirlpool commercial quality, top load, plain jane washing machine that had given us 10 years of faithful service had quit. We quickly determined the plastic gears that drive the agitator were stripped (probably from 10 years of... Read full review »

Nice options for the price, but a few flaws

Pros Lots of options and low energy costs
Cons Gross seam that collects everything and bad rinse cycle
Recommended it? Yes

I have been using this washer for just over a year and although I like it overall, it has its ups and downs. When it was time to purchase a washer, I knew that I wanted a front loading model and one that met Energy Star requirements. This model was very tempting due to the number of options it... Not bad, but not "wowed," either.

Cons Does not clean as well as my top-loader, flimsy tray, capacity not large enough.
Recommended it? Yes

The Backstory...
I had a pair of Whirlpool white washer/dryer for about 13 years when my washer finally stopped agitating. After suffering washer envy from every single family member for at least a decade, we finally decided to replace them.

The Purchase...
We went to H.H. Gregg and... Read full review »

What you need to know before buying - here is why you are seeing such mixed reviews about this machine:

About washing with this machine-

What a Great Washing Machine

Pros PRICE, RATINGS, EFFICIENCY, REBATES, simply the best value for the dollar.
Cons Absolutely None. I only wish these babies were available 10 years ago.
Recommended it? Yes

When my wife told me she had called an appliance repairman to come look at our 10 year old top loader, I told her to cancel the call. After 10 years, we had gotten the best out of our old Top Loader and it was time to retire it.

Instead of the knee-jerk reaction to go to the local Best Buy,... Read full review »

Add up the savings, stuff in the clothes, but don't forget...

Pros Uses almsot no water.   Clean clothes.  Countdown timer.  Mid-load changes are ok.  Quiet.
Cons Uses almost no water.
Recommended it? Yes

The old top loader needed a $300 motor.  Eventually I convinced the landlord that this $800 washer would save money.  I added up the savings: $200 water company rebate, $100 savings in water heating gas in the first year, $40 in water savings (we're facing drought penalties), $100 in less wear and... Pros Multiple cycle choices, cleans very well with little water, spins nearly dry.
Cons water remaining in gasket/bellows, not reliable
Recommended it? No

I wanted to like this washer, but after three years, I'm done with it.

It had almost all the features - an almost endless choice of cycles (there are 14 choices of cycles), water temps, spin speeds, a digital readout for time left, great capacity, etc. It cleaned very well in a reasonable... Read full review »
