The Strange and Solipsistic World of ER-6 Earphones

byahathaway May 28, 2002

Pros Compact, remarkable sound, allows listening at lower volumes
Cons Inconvenient to insert, modestly comfortable, may raise solipsistic questions
Recommended it? Yes

When $129 looks like a "value":
Many people have written about the remarkable sound these earphones produce, much like their pricier ER-4S sibling. Never having heard the higher-end models, I can't directly compare them, but the often-repeated comment that they provide 85% of the ER-4S quality... Read full review »

Pros Tiny size, BIG sound, isolation.
Cons Not quite the richness of the ER4's; isolation.
Recommended it? Yes

Even after reading pages and pages of favorable reviews on Etymotic earphones, I was still completely blown away by how good they sound! I ordered the ER6, as well as the ER4P, from HeadRoom...knowing they are only too happy to let you try things out.

Right up front, I have to say that... Read full review »

Pros Comfortable fit, excellent noise reduction, clear sound even at low volume.
Cons Cost (although cheap for what you get), can be fragile if not handled properly.
Recommended it? Yes

We live in a very remote area, and spend many hours on streetbikes - both locally and on long-distance tours.

Even with the best helmet money can buy, wind noise is still somewhat of an issue (unless you really WANT to grow up to be that old guy in the corner yelling "WHAT???" every five... Read full review »

Pros Sound, Noise isolation, Portability
Cons require a lot of power to drive, none if you like ear-plugs
Recommended it? Yes

Etymotic were my second [serious] headphones.

First were Sony's xx70xx.

For comparation, check my update for Sony headphones.

After plugging Etymotic for a first time - they were - comfortable. They sounded very different from Sony.

Now, after 3 months sound... Read full review »

Pros Accuracy, clarity, response. Sound isolation. Look good.
Cons Difficult to insert without practice. Pouch is a joke. The cord is really long.
Recommended it? Yes

I have had the Etymotic ER-6's for about 6 months now. I purchased it after I got my new iPod with video knowing that the Apple supplied earphones weren't the best. I'm not a true audiophile, but I do know the difference between accuracy and clarity in contrast to just overly bright highs.

What attracted to me these phones was the combination of ultimate portability and noise-cancelling goodness. (I had just purchased a portable mp3 player and the included phones just werent 'doing it for me', to put it lightly.)

Comfort: Sometimes causes dryness & itchiness in my... Read full review »

Intro
A very good friend of mine bought me an I-Pod, so I embraced the technology and loaded my entire CD selection to it. Now the problem is the earphones that came with the i-pod are just your regular flavor. Being I always burn the candle at both ends, I sometimes find it impossible to... Read full review »

Pros In my case there were none.
Cons No bass whatsoever.
Recommended it? No

After a fair amount of research, I decided to purchase the ER-6IC earphones over the internet. Unfortunately, when they arrived they were TOTALLY lacking in bass response. No amount of ear fit adjustment yielded a significant improvement. I even let a knowledgeable friend try them who reached the... Read full review »

I bought a pair of Etymotic ER-6 isolators to go with my newly purchased Zen Micro. These little things are simply amazing and the sound quality is excellent. When I was looking into headphones, the first of my criteria for selection was noise cancellation. I am a student in a design studio so I... Read full review »

I have had these for two or three months now. Ive used them with my sharp mindisc player and also while listening to mp3s and DVDs through my SBlive card. Ive also tested them with heaps of other portable equipment, discmans and mp3 players so I have been able to form a good opinion on them. I am... Read full review »
