Epic Mickey (Nintendo Wii, 2010)

Epic Mickey is a 3D platform adventure game starring Disney's most famous cartoon character. The game's themes involve artistic style the creative process. Much of the exploration and action take place in an alternate realm called Wasteland, a place inhabited by characters and ideas from lesser-known Disney animation projects, and ruled by Oswald the Rabbit, one of Walt Disney's very first cartoon creations. Mickey's most important tools are paint and thinner, which he can use to alter the illustrated world around him. Throughout the adventure, the game emphasizes the concept of "Playstyle Matters." There are multiple ways to overcome problems the hero faces in Wasteland, but his actions have consequences, and the game's story develops according to the choices players make. What may seem like the easiest solution, short-term, might not be best in the end. Epic Mickey was developed under the supervision of esteemed game designer Warren Spector, whose Junction Point Studios was acquired by the Walt Disney Company before the game was publicly announced.

Pros Great use of familiar and obscure Disney makes it fun
Cons Poor camera adds to some frustration with certain levels

I’m not much of a gamer, and when I do play a video game, I prefer the simpler games like I grew up playing.  As a result, the quest games that follow a long story through a created world aren’t normally my thing.  But I quickly made an exception when Epic Mickey was released... Read full review »

14 Helpfuls 15 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Graphics are good, characters bring about a sense of nostalgia, fun
Cons Camera is a pain, repetitive, a bit short
Recommended it? Yes

I was more interested in Epic Mickey when I'd first read about it in Game Informer before it came out. Certain aspects sounded fascinating but have since then been revised; originally performing negative actions in the game would cause Mickey to look more rat-like instead of becoming blobby like...
