You'll need the extended warranty
My unit stopped recording or playing dvds 1 year and 5 days after the purchase.
Although I had actually reported the problem over email before the warranty expired they would not cover it because I did not call on the phone even though I had a reference number from the email.

Philips DVDR75 DVD Recorder / Player get bad very quick

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
After nine months I cannot get a dvd to work on this player. I receive "Disc Error -Please eject disc- Playback feature may not be available on disc" every time I try to play a dvd, even if they're new. Steer clear of this one
Well, I wished I had found these reviews before we picked up this unit. We did manage to get about 5 months out of it before the DVD started clicking and reporting that it could not read the disks I put in it. I tried a laser lens cleaner on it just in case but it still has the same problem.

I agree with the bad reviews because I had the exact same problem with my dvd player. After 9 months of use it quit playing dvds and kept basically saying eject it doesnt play this disk.
