Pros None
Cons Does not work as advertised - will not connect to computer
Recommended it? No

Purchased Celestron Skyscout and could not get it connected to PC (tried Windows XP and Vista).  Very poor product technical support -  the Skyscout website lists 4 year old USB drivers as the most recent and tech support advised me that I would have to purchase additional PC software... Must have for urban astronomers

Pros Easy to use.  Accurate.  Intuitive.
Cons I might put a "this end towards sky" arrow on it.  No comment.  :)
Recommended it? Yes

I live in Washington D.C., so I relate well to the joke in "Madagascar" when they say "Oh look - the star is out."  It's a challenge to identify some constellations when you can't really see all the key players due to light pollution.  This helps.

There are three key functions, of which two... Read full review »

I live in Australia and purchased this item when in Las Vegas from a listed Celestron Dealer. When I got the unit home busting to use this thing, I was sadly dissapointed. It does not stay locked on Sats so gives hit and miss readings. Somtimes it's spot on locating items whilst other times it's... Read full review »

Piece of junk-doesn't work

Pros A good idea in concept
Cons It doesn't work. Horrible technical support.
Recommended it? No

Got it out of box. Seemed simple enough, powered on. Got immediate error message. "GPS hardware problem. Contact technical support." I called their 800 number. As I write this I've been on hold 15 minutes. "A brief delay" as far as they are concerned. I have emailed their technical support website... Read full review »

Pros Good sales pitch and colourful box.
Cons Don't waste anymore time or money (especially on batteries).

Looked like a fantastic piece of kit to help students I teach and also allied with a spotting scope would make thing much easier to find, a great furore was generated with fantastic reviews and recommendations therefore it was surely going to be an amazing new addition to the astronomers arsenal... Just bought one--doesn't work

Pros It didn't bring a lethal virus into my home (I think)
Cons It cost a lot and it doesn't work.
Recommended it? No

I'm trying to get my new SkyScout to do anything right. Its won't get a gps fix, it won't keep my manually entered settings, it won't stop making my computer tell me that it is new hardware that needs to be installed (no matter how many times I successfully install it)... ahhhh!

Pros It was fun and informative to use.
Cons Had some accuracy problems but they are somewhat minor.
Recommended it? Yes

I am going to assume that the reader already knows about the SkyScout from the other reviews and the marketing literature. I won't repeat those here but will make a couple of comments on what is not immediately known.

Construction: First I did not think it was "cheaply" made like some... Read full review »

Pros Wonderful and amazing product, everything about it is great!
Cons The only bad thing about the SkyScout is waiting for it to be shipped.
Recommended it? Yes

I read many reviews about the SkyScout before buying one. Ever positive remark was true, it is a truly amazing device. The only negative feedback was battery consumption, which I was concerned about. I was pleasantly surprised to find the the batteries lasted a long time, MUCH longer than I was... Read full review »

Pros Works great, very accurate, amazing results
Cons Battery life relatively short; need to re-initialize if the unit times out and shuts down
Recommended it? Yes

The first unit I bought worked fine, but could not acquire the GPS fix (needed to avoid manually entering my observing location coordinates)...second unit works fine...apparently there was a bad batch (maybe the issue seen by some other reviewers).

The unit is functioning great... Read full review »

Not a good investment

Pros Great idea, compact and easy to use
Cons It is not accurate, and does not work as suggested
Recommended it? No

I have read the postings from other frustrated consumers of this product. My experiences mirror those of the reviews you read for the SkyScout. My wife purchased this for me as a Christmas gift. I couldn't wait to use it, but on the first attempt the unit couldn't get a GPS fix. I turned it off and... Read full review »

Pros Great idea
Cons Poorly engineered.
Recommended it? No

The one I was given as a gift could not find the GPS location. While trying I went through so many batteries I decided to return it. These are engineering 101 mistakes and while it is a great idea, someone should have put the brakes on and released it next year.

In one or two iterations,... Read full review »

Great idea, poor execution

Pros It names the indicated star/planet, without your entering your city or the date.
Cons Eats batteries. High error rate. Uninformed service representatives.
Recommended it? No

I read the initial product description of the SkyScout and bought one. I really liked the idea of combining the different devices into a new useful product. You point the instrument at a star or planet and it identifies it, without your having to input the name of a nearby city or the date. You ask... Read full review »

I ordered a SkyScout the day it was reviewed in the Wall Street Journal. It seemed like such amazing technology that I had to have it.

Counter to some of the other reviews here, my SkyScout has performed almost exactly as advertised, and I am extremely pleased.

Pros Really great idea
Cons Cheaply made, expensive, poor performance.
Recommended it? No

I couldn't wait to buy this product!

The first thing I noticed was how cheaply it was made. I don't need it to be made of gold or anything, but at least the plastic plugs that protect the jack ports should have fit and stayed in place.

The second thing was that it didn't work!... Read full review »

Cons Uses 2 AA batteries too quickly.

I purchased the SkyScout a couple of days ago and it worked much better than I had expected. I was amazed that it not only new where I was (Long, Lat) but it knew the direction and angle I pointed it in.

I had only a cursory read of the quick start guide and was anxious to use it. I... Read full review »

Pros Amazing innovation.
Cons Poor execution. No customer support.

I really wanted to like this product. It shows innovation at its best. Taking several existing technologies and blending them into something that never existing before.

I'm not really surprised that they had problems. Celestron is not used to building this type of product and definitely... Read full review »
