Great for what it is..

byy2khardtop Sep 13, 2005

Pros Small size, good battery life
Cons weak gps/antenna, no mapping capability
Recommended it? Yes

Not for navigation, but really good for biking etc. The signal strength is pretty weak, so even jogging, I often lose signal. However, on my bike, it does a great job. Especially usefull when in new areas, as I can program in "waypoints" to make sure I don't miss a turn Read full review »

Good tool, but not great

byepilacho Jul 15, 2005
8 Helpfuls 9 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? 1 Comment
Pros low cost, light weight, general idea of distance
Cons not precise enough in pace or distance
Recommended it? Yes

I was very excited to try out the 201 forerunner when I first got it. I must say that it is not as accurate as I would like. Maybe I'm being overly picky, but when I did an out and back 10 mile run, the out distance was about a tenth of a mile off from the back distance. Probably not the biggest... Read full review »

Garmin Forerunner 201 GPS Receiver: Worth the Cost to Track Your Performance?

byhwz1 Jul 8, 2005
49 Helpfuls 50 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Easy to use, accurate, lightweight, options
Cons Takes some getting used to, software could be better
Recommended it? Yes

I have always used some method to try to track my performance while working out. Almost all of my workouts are performed outside and it is not always easy to determine how far or fast I have covered the territory. I have used numerous pedometers, but they always seem to freeze up or the batteries... Read full review »

Run By The Numbers

bysteve39 Jun 16, 2005

Pros Good product for tracking distance and location when running.
Cons Falls short when signal is lost and is clunky to wear.
Recommended it? No

I guess there are two types of runners--step on the gas and fly by the numbers.

If you fall into category two, this is a device you should consider.

It provides a rich array of data about your pace and the terrain you are covering. If you want a measured course--this will give... Read full review »

Poor product, low quality and unreliable

byyba30 May 19, 2005
2 Helpfuls 3 Helpfuls Was this review helpful? Comment
Pros Claimed features
Cons Nothing works. Elevation, calories, distance, weak GPS signal, "moody" device
Recommended it? No

Bought this device 3 weeks ago and returned it today. What a scam this is... Nothing works properly. The elevation gage is always off, the calorie count makes no sense, the GPS signal always low or non-existent and many times the device just won't start up (it will start counting distance only... Good training aide

Pros Nice design, ease of use, easy to use software, overall a pretty good training tool.
Cons Can't print from software, not precise data, indoors its just a heart rate monitor.
Recommended it? Yes

You can track your heart rate, pace and distance. The software is easy to use and lets you trend this data. Unfortunately there is no print option for your information.

The Forerunner 301 isn't precise in distance tracking and loses signal under large trees or underpasses. This affects... Read full review »

Love it... better free software

Pros track my mileage, show routes
Cons SOFTWARE IS USELESS!
Recommended it? Yes

I got this for xmas from my wife and love it. The signal reception where I live is very good - except in heavily forested areas. As an example when cycling the odometer read 5 miles, and my Forerunner read 3.5 !!

But for running around my neighborhood the distances are within a couple... Read full review »

FORERUNNER 301: The ultimate tracking device?

bytheuerkorn Apr 19, 2005

Pros GPS based track record, heart rate monitor, basic GPS function, training programs, PC link
Cons Spotty GPS reliability in thick forest, one user only, chest strap unreliable, useless...
Recommended it? No

The Garmin Forerunner 301 is the latest gadgetry in fitness accessories. Heart rate monitors (HRM) like the ones from Polar are common these days. Garmin offered until recently everything but heart rate. With the 301 the GPS based Forerunner (101 or 201) got married with a chest strap HRM. It's the... Read full review »

***UPDATES ARE AVALIABLE AT THE END OF THIS REVIEW:

The Garmin Forerunner 201 GPS Receiver is the perfect running companion when you finally get tired or running indoors, on a treadmill, or when it's just too nice to be inside.

Pros Simple to use, accurate, easy to read, not too heavy
Cons Very limited problem with calorie reading
Recommended it? Yes

I bought my Forerunner Dec 26 (Thanks for the cash, Santa) and it has been an awesome purchase. I use it for all of my outdoor runs.

I had heard a ton of reviews talking about how hard it was to get or keep a signal, and I have found the opposite to be true. I live outside of the city,... Read full review »

Garmin Forerunner 201 Waterproof Running GPS

Finally, an alternative to awkward pedometers and cycling computers. The Forerunner 201 offers athletes an easy-to-read display and integrated GPS satellite receiver that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data--all in one compact unit that straps to your wrist. It’s a lightweight, accurate training assistant with performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more. And because it is a high quality Garmin GPS device, you get many of the features GPS users have come to rely on, such as precise latitude, longitude, altitude data. Choose either the 201 model for rechargeable power or the 101 if you prefer to use 2 AAA batteries. The Forerunner 201 is easy to use right out of the box and delivers the benefits of GPS technology at an affordable price. To please folks who are passionate about their exercise and training, Garmin has added something special to the Forerunner 201 called the Virtual Partner. The feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner’s pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner’s pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind. Almost as important as the training device itself are the accessories to integrate it with your active lifestyle. If you're into cycling, the best way to keep an eye on your GPS while you ride is with a bike mount bracket that straps to the handlebars of your bike, motorcycle, or whatever you're traveling with for easy viewing. Other Forerunner 201 features: Mark specific locations, and then look-up and navigate to these points using an electronic map. Retrace your steps to a starting point or reverse your normal route for routine variation. Amount of calories burned can be tracked and calculated over the course of a workout. Lap history--such as lap time, lap distance, and average pace--can be stored for up to two years. Performance data can be automatically archived and calculated to provide an accurate record. Automated stopwatch provides auto-lap and auto-pause features. Lap timer indicates when a certain speed is reached or when you’ve fallen below a pre-set level. Pace whistle sounds alert when you begin traveling slower or faster than your desired pace. Distance whistle sounds when you reach a specified duration or distance in your workout. Download free Garmin software to transfer data from your Forerunner 201 to your PC for storage and analysis.
